In 480 BC 300 Spartans under King Leovidas resisted a large Persian Army led by King Xerxes who was invading Greece. The Spartans held them off until a traitor told the Persians about a secret passage behind the Spartans and the Spartans were all killed.

When word of the final defeat of the Spartans reached Greece all of the provinces were inspired to unite and the Persian army was resisted and had to retreat back to Persia. A movie called "The 300 Spartans" with Richard Egan was made in the 60s about this true event.
