NO-HITTER SENDS SALADO TO FINALS 2008-06-05
(ROUND ROCK) Kevin Jackson was hitting nearly everything that San Angelo Grape Creek threw at him Wednesday morning. An RBI single in the first inning, then a two-run double in the second helped the senior slugger pile up a game-high three RBIs.
And defensively, he hurled a no-hitter shutting out Grape Creek 11-0 in the Class 2A state semifinals at Dell Diamond.
Jackson, who pitched his second no-hitter of the season, struck out eight and walked three. The game was called after five innings because of the UIL`s mercy rule. It was only the second no-hitter in Class 2A state tournament history, and the first since Pilot Point Selz`s Russ Horton blanked Grand Saline in a 1995 state semifinal.
After scoring twice in the first inning, the Eagles batted around in the second and scored six runs to extend their lead to 8-0.
Garrett Ward hit a monstrous home run in the fourth inning to account for the team`s final two runs.
Ward`s home run off reliever Mitchell Pustka ended up in the Dell Diamond parking lot after bouncing off an advertising sign above the home run porch that sits beyond the left-field fence. The home run was estimated at 420 feet.
The Eagles will face Corsicana Mildred (31-6) today for the Class 2A championship.
Also during state tournament action Wednesday, The Hutto Hippos saw their season come to an end despite a 3 run 7th inning, losing to Snyder 7-5 in the class 3A state semifinals.

One questionable call/discussion delayed the game about 10 minutes!!!! There was at least 3 of these discussions while I was there!!! 2 hrs had past since the start of the game and it was JUST the Top of the 5th!!! I had other things to do, so I had to leave!!! Sorry!!
