View Full Version : Another great way to improve your gasoline mileage!

It isn't nothing new but if you try it you may be able to get as good as 50 miles/gallon and maybe a little better.

When traveling accelerate slowly - very slowly up to 20 miles per hour. Then take your foot off the gas petal and let your vehicle coash. When it gets down to 8 miles per hour then you again accelerate - slowly - very slowly up to 20 miles per hour then repeat the process. Of course it will take you much longer to get to your destination and some other drivers may not like you driving slow but hey - it is your money you are saving. Good luck and happy gasoline saving miles to you.

I'm not sure who thought it up originally but I heard it on the Johnny Carson show many years ago when people were upset when gasoline went from about 50 cents to 75 cents per gallon. :)

Have a nice trip to Kansas!

Why not just push your vehicle? j.k.

Some real tips include:
1. Keep the tires aired up at the recommended pressure.
2. Accelerate slowly.
3. Coast wherever possible.
4. Take in the big picture. When in city traffic with stop lights, avoid quick jaunts to the next light. Keep it smooth on the stops and starts.
5. Keep vehicle maintained.

I do a few of those miler tricks. My little Jetta averages around 38 and it is 12 years old with almost 170,000 on it.

With that age and mileage, you will probably be following my advice and walking. Sooner that you might want. :D :p :D

50-55 mph is where you get the best mpg. Every mile per hour over 60 you lose 1% of your mpg. Driving 70 is like adding 55 cents to each gallon of gas.

I drove 60 this past Friday on that same trip. Never passed a single car, but I sure pissed off a few that hauled butt up behind me and had to slow way down till they got an opening to pass me. Got some real dirty looks. I just smiled a waved.:D
