Why is there a 3A school in the DISD? Is it some sort of specialty magnet school or something else?

They are not the only 3A school in the DISD. Dallas Madison is also a 3A school.

i would guess they're in a part of dallas that has smaller populations and that means there would be less people going to those schools...

dallas used to have mostly 5A schools, now most are 4A. why? because the population gradually goes to the suburbs, which happens in all cities. next realignment they'll probably have more 3A (roosevelt could have been 3A but opted up) and we may have seen the end of the all-DISD 5A district too.

3a - I'd be surprised if that is the reason. Houston and San Antonio have the same inner city flight but no 3A schools. Typically when school populations drop, the school boundaries are expanded to bring in more students. Eventually you can even close a school or 2 as there are too many.

Fort Worth has 2 3A schools...Carter-Riverside and Diamond Hill. The 3a limit has just gotten so high, that it has incoporated some inner city schools. These schools haven't really shrunk, but the the ceiling has just past them up.

Maybe the 2 Dallas schools continue to exist instead of being folded into others for historical reasons? I just read where Madison was the first "African-American" HS in Dallas and Pinkston was the 1st integrated HS in Dallas. There may be some strong support to keep them open for historical reasons.

Madison is in the building of the old Forest Avenue High School. I think the first all black school was Booker T Washington, now an Arts magnet HS. Not sure if Madison had another before thaat or not.
