We will be making our first trip to Las Vegas this summer. Any advice would be wonderful. I am looking for things like where to gamble, shows to see, places to eat, etc.

Take a tour of Hoover Dam

Thats a cool site

Its better if you rent a car and make the drive through a couple of old historic towns

Where are you staying and will you rent a car?

I suggest getting a rental car and you will be able to see more of Vegas. Most casinos have free valet parking and the average tip is $2. If you play blackjack, downtown has better odds than most of the casinos on the strip. I like video poker and the Palms had some of the 100% machines. Check online for free vegas coupons and be sure to check out the local Vegas magazines at most of the casinos. You can find 2 for 1 shows and other discounts. We went to the Legends and American Superstars shows which feature singing impersonators. We also did a Vegas type show Folies Bergere at the Tropricana. The Cirque du Soleil's shows are great, but very expensive. Madame's Tussard's wax museum was cool because they let you take pictures with all the wax figures. Women can take a wedding picture with George Clooney or lay in bed with Hugh Hefner. Guys can take pictures with Michael Jordan, Shaq and J-Lo.

The Hard Rock Casino has a steak/Shrimp special for $7.77, but it's not on the menu, you'll have to ask for it. We enjoyed crepes & croissants inside the Paris Hotel and ate some fabulous meatloaf at the Harley Davidson restaurant. I heard Fatburger makes great hamburgers and there is also the In & Out burgers. Downtown at the Golden Gate has the .99 cents shrimp cocktails and Mermaids has the fried twinkies.

If you get a car, the Hoover Dam is neat to see. Definately try to get Downtown and see the Freemont light show and some of the older casinos. We also took a picture in front of the famous "Welcome to Vegas" sign. Lots of things to do besides gambling, but make sure you take lots of money. Vegas has become very expensive.

Downtown for better odds. Vegas Club, Binions and Fitzgeralds. The Rio has great odds, off the strip and they want you to come gamble plus they have an all you can eat SEAFOOD buffett that is out of this world. Middle of the strip you gotta go to Margaritaville at the Flamingo. Casino Royale, IP, O'sheas and Bills. Lots to see, do not panic, you will not see it all. If you are staying at a very nice place, make sure you check out the POOL!!!! ESPN zone at NY NY is a must see in my opinion. Outside pavilion with live bands and cool bartenders in between Harrahs and the IP is a must as well. House of Blues at Mandalay Bay. Heck, you could spend 3 days in Caesars alone! We are going out in July. Have a great time!!

If you are going to only see one show, go see "Love" at the Mirage. The Beatles music alone makes it worth the money but the Cirque du Soleil performers are superb. Red Rock Canyon is about a 20 minute drive west and it is inexpensive and gorgeous. Stratosphere tower is great (go up about 30 minutes before sunset and watch the lights on the strip come on as darkness sets in!)

Here's a link for some free coupons:

The Bellagio fountains, Sirens show at TI , Lions exhibit at the MGM and M&M World are some of the free things to do. There's a Coyote Ugly club at NY-NY and the Playboy Club inside the Palms. Most of the younger crowd seems to like the outside night life between Harrah's and IP.

Gambling is definately better downtown or off the strip. I prefer some of the smaller casinos compared to the mega casinos.

LOL. I 've been there twice. I spent a week there both times. The
first time I didn't get to see nearly as much as I wanted. I went
back three years later and things had changed so much it was like
starting all over again with the sight seeing.

We are staying at the Silverton Casino Lodge. It is off the strip - everything on the strip is so expensive on the weekends, and we didn't figure we needed to pay too much for a room we weren't going to be in that much. We want to see the Hoover Dam, but aren't planning on renting a car. Any recommendations on a place to use to tour the dam? Also, do I need to schedule a taxi from the airport, or are they all over the place?

Hoover Dam Guide: I am your dam guide, Arnie, please don't wander off the dam tour and please take all the dam pictures you want. Now are there any dam questions?

Cousin Eddie: Yeah, where can I get some damn bait?

Check with the hotel they may have a shuttle from the airport. If they don't you won't have a problem getting a taxi, but I'd check with a shuttle service. They are usually cheaper.

Same deal with the tour of the Hoover Dam. The hotel should have information on various tour companies & rates.

Good luck!

Just got back from Vegas Saturday afternoon. We had 8 people going out to the dam so we rented a van from Dollar Rental there at the Excalibur. They quoted us $108 but the van was 25 minutes late and they let us have it for $60 and no gas charge. The trip to The dam was about 30 or 35 minutes. The lowest tour we were quoted was $48 a person, I would recomend renting a car. Vegas was great. We got there Wednesday and left Saturday morning , it never got over 75 degrees and we had a great time.
Hope you enjoy you trip.

Rent a towncar or a limo to take you to your hotel. Depending what time you're getting to Vegas, you'll wait 30+ minutes in the line for a cab and it will cost you $15-25 (depends on if the cabbie long hauls you. Wait nvm you're staying at Silverson which is south of the strip and off of I-15...so disregard the cost part. It should cost you about $17.04 according to the LV Taxi Cab authority. If it comes out to be $25 or so...then offer to pay $17 and if they argue tell them you'll call them in to the LVTA. So yeah...I find cabs in Vegas to be a bit of a hassle when going to/from the airport. Otherwise they're fine. You can get a towncar for $30, won't have to wait, and have some privacy, peace, and quiet.

Sorry I'm rambling today...had to go back on pain meds today so this was not my best Vegas post ever. Search for some of my other posts or feel free to PM me with specific questions. If there's one "healthy addiction" that I have...it's Vegas! :)
