Is the Luling City Market listed the actual one located in Luling?

I ask this because there is a "Luling City Market" in Houston which is a knockoff of the original one in Luling

What about Cooper's in Llano?

It certainly ranks as my favorite!

Striedels in Cuero is by far the best. Most havent even heard of it :) thats how we like it. Hide all the good food.

Streidel's used to sell cuts of meats and cheeses. It's been a while since I've been, but they had good meats and cheeses. It's a little off the beaten path, though!

I have ate at both Kruez and Luling Meat Market. I prefer Luling but both are excellent.

lil44 ate their Thursday. When he was in high school - that was their tradition to eat there on Thursdays - Mr Striedel aka Roland, works well with the high school kids -they could tell him - "I want $1.50 sliced beef, $1.00 sausage, $1 beans and potatoe salad" if they are running low on cash, Roland or Patsy will throw the tea in for free :)

My favorite on the TM list is City Meat Market in Luling - Kruetz in Lockhart is good but I do like a little sauce with my brisket and they won't serve sauce :(

While I like to see other places get some recognition, 2 of the places on the list are "clearly mediocre".

Wild Blue BBQ in Los Fresnos---Parking lot is always empty & even LF residents say it is average at best.

Longhorn Cattle Co. in San Benito--I've been there a couple of times and the food is OK, but nothing to write home about.

Joe Cotten's(which only made honorable mention) is way better than either of these 2 places

All I have at Coopers is the BIG CHOP which is top notch. I cant comment on the rest because I never get past the BIG CHOP. That in itself is always worth my trip.

what do you guys think about Black's in Lockhart? Oldest BBQ place in Texas?

the food wasn't bad, but it wasn't very good compared to the other two in town...

I was editor of one of the Llano newspapers from 2004-06. Cooper's went WAY DOWN in quality, even tho it remained highly-priced..

It's definitely not what it used to be - it's a "sentimental" favorite for a lot of people but I've been to 3-4 places much better since I moved back to Austin/CP/LIberty Hill area..

Gobbla, I agree with ya. I was not too impressed with Black's. As far as Cooper's, I liked the Cooper's in Mason better. The Cabrito was da bomb!! Some of my favorites in no particular order:

Salt Lick in Driftwood
Southside Market in Elgin
Louie Mueller's in Taylor
Cooper's in Mason
Kruetz's in Lockhart

I better stop. I'm getting hungry!!!!

Millers can't hold a candle to the City market in Luling and Kreuz in Lockhart. they wouldn't feed Miller's to their dogs.

You'd better have a wad of cash when you go to Cooper's. I'd vote them the most over-priced.

my question is... how do you get this job of driving around Texas to see which bar b q place is the best?
I think Texas Monthly needs to pay me to go to back yard bar b q's as welll...

If you don't serve BBQ sauce with your meat, you don't deserve to be ranked. In my opinion, the sauce is every bit, if not more important than the meat. I've had brisket cooked in back yards that is just as good as any on that list. I don't like plain meat, though. It's just not BBQ without a good sauce.

If I had to name my favorite right now, I'd say Smoaky Mo's in Liberty Hill (or their other area locations)...very good sauce. I'm not going to say it's the best or that everyone will love it, but it's at the top of my list.

I have tried three of the four Coopers; the one in Mason is my favorite, the one in Llano is okay; the one in Junction is great just not as good at the one in Mason. The one in Round Rock I have not tried. It is my understandting that the one in Round Rock as well as the one in Junction are the only two that are still owned by the sons of the orignal owner, George Cooper.

Still believe Taste Woods BBQ in Wharton deserves a mention

Also Mustang Creek in Louise

At at Hinze's in Wharton after church on Sunday and brisket was dry as a bone

Luling City Market in Luling is still No 1 on my list

There's a dive in Victoria in the old part of town that's good but can't think of the name

Also a place in Hallettsville that has great Ribs but cant think of that name either

No Best BBQ list is complete unless you include West Texas BBQ in Silsbee. The best ribs and brisket in all of southeast Texas.
Their homemade pies are awesome also.
