I was watching an old ESPN episode on their top ten NFL versatile football players and Sammy Baugh was No. 1!! He was a great quarterback who could run and pass, he was a great punter and he was also a great and highly respected defensive back. In fact in one year (1940) he led the league in passing completions, punting average, and interceptions. No one has ever duplicated it.

Not surprising Green Bay's Paul Hornung was no. 2. He was a great running back and could do the pass option plus he was a good place kicker. Sammy probably edge him out because of his great defensive play. One former player said he was a hard hitter when he hit you.

Yes, that was a different time in the NFL. The NFL is so
specialized at every position now, you'll never see anyone
duplicate his numbers.:(
