One thing I see that's a huge flaw is that these rankings don't have any schools below 4A in them. There are some 3A and below schools with VERRRRY good academic offerings...they just don't offer as many honors classes as a 5A and thus you don't find kids with 105 GPA's. GPA's are very skewed. Case in point the schools in Abilene ISD. AP classes are your advanced classes (+10 points per class), honors classes are for your typical student (+5 points per class), and regular classes are for remedial students. So you take the kid that's in the 20th percentile of his class at Abilene High with a 97 GPA (which should be AT MOST a 92 but more like an 88-90) and transfer him to Wylie. Now he's in the Top 10% (or higher) of his class. Now most anybody in Abilene would tell you that Wylie ISD is a better academic district than Abilene ISD...yet because of the discrepancy in grading systems...an average Abilene kid can manipulte the system and look like an elite kid at Wylie.

thats way too much thinkin' ..... its just a list

that list has nothing to do w/ GPA...its amount of AP/Baccaleurte (sp is wrong i know)/Cambridge tests taken divided by number of graduating seniors....seems a school can make their numbers better if they just get a bunch of kids to take tests whether they would pass them or not...

I was relating how AP/Honors grades factor into making your school look better.

There were a bunch of schools that jumped out at me as schools that many don't consider "good schools" yet they end up on this list. I think it would be interesting to dig up the academic rating given by the TEA (I think that's who gives it out) to these schools. I think you'll find plenty that aren't "exemplary" or "recognized."

Thats another thing you can attribute to being a large or magnet school is they can offer more AP classes so more AP test and school like that offer IB diplomas.

Exactly. Bigger school = more students = more kids qualified to take AP classes = more AP classes offered. It's all about size. I thought it was cool to see Highland Park that high. If you look at the names of the top 14 nationally, they are all magnet schools, or technical schools. Technically, that would make Highland Park the #1 true public school in the nation.

You still have to "qualify" (read afford the housing) to live in Highland Park! :p

That's where my daughter is hopfully attending in the 2009-2010 school year. Med High that is, and the best part is it's only 5 miles from our house. Either school is usually top rated every year some years higher than others.
