Seems like so far that Coaching is at the top of the list. Are you saying then that a good coach can turn an average team into a state contender?

I think heart and determination has to be at the top of the list. You can take a team with average talent who love to play and who will give 100% all the time and make them into a good team. Example, 2A team Paul Pewitt. They were not expected to do anything this year. DCTF had them ranked next too last in their distrcit before the season started. They were young and did not have the talent level as past teams. No one gave this team a chance. They started the year out rough, but ended up dist. champions and made it three rounds into the play-offs.

i dont think a lot of you are giving luck enough credit
whether it be bad luck if the running back trips over himself in the backfield and falls, or a ref turns right before an illegal block
or good luck if the ref gives you ball when you really shouldnt have got it...
im not saying that luck plays with a championship team the whole season, but in the playoffs and championship game, luck matters A LOT

I believe that heart and determination, talent and community support are things that makes a team one of those special teams "capable" of winning state. I then believe that injuries, mistakes, coaching, and luck are the things that causes one of these special teams to beat all the other special teams during the playoffs to claim the championship. I have put these in the order of importance in my opinion. I have added injuries and mistakes to the list if that is O.K.

talent and coaching are by FAR the most important...every team has heart, i guess, but the best programs utilize their good coaching and talent...

Talent is most important but will fail without great coaching to maximize that talent. Heart and determination is essential. Good teams make their own luck.

To me heart and desire are a by-product of good coaching. If a team is well coached they will have heart and desire. These should fall under the same category.

coaching then talent. As far as the other stuff a great coach will get the boys to play their hearts out. When the team starts winning consistently the community will start backing them. The hard part is to get the Coach to stay nowadays. They either burn out or use the school for a stepping stone. Nature of the business.

Are you saying then that a good coach can turn an average team into a state contender?I feel that a coach has to evaluate his team's talent and adapt an offense based on that talent. As well as putting the right players in the right positions. So, with that.......

1. Coaching
2. Heart and det.
3. Talent
4. Luck
5. Community and school backing

Just my 2 cents worth. :)

I agree 3AFAN. Talent, coaching, luck. You have to have some breaks in the playoffs. The rest kinda fall in place.....
