My #2 would have to be in 2001, that same year, when Forney's DaBryan Blanton ran a 20.37 in the 200 meters. It was wild. I believe he was in lane 1 and half way through the curve you could tell it was over.

coach hunt showed us video of that in class - they had the camera zoomed all the way out and he was the only one in the picture.....

remember that time his blocks slipped at the beginning of the 100m in regionals and he got up and still won.....that was cool....

I have seen many highlights, but clearly the highest was watching Jasper become the first high school team to run the 400 meter relay in under 40 seconds (the old fashioned hand-held) in 1991 at 39.9 (40.07 automatic). That new national record held for some six years.

I don't remember who the school was that broke their record, but it was a FW school (2 of the 4 were brothers Milton and Damario Wesley) and they ran it out of lane 1. And, I was there eating popcorn.

OD Wyatt 39.76 4x100

Marlon Ramsey - Beaumont Westbrook - 45.12 400 meters. Later rounded to 45.24 for some reason. I thought it was FAT. Thunderstorms moved through and cooled thing off. Wet track under the lights at DKR. Awesome.

Randy Hall - Calhoun High School (friend) 16'-8" pole vault in 1977 All time state record at the time. Went to a meet the following weeks and went 16'-10" for National Record. This was wayyyyyyy before the Orangefield boys started going crazy in the pole vault.

Cory Richardson - Dangerfield - 10.37 100 meters - I have seen better times but never a better setting. I always make it a point to sit in the middle of true track fans. I am as white as can be but I like sitting in the middle of the fans from Dallas Roosevelt or Beaumont Ozen or the other predominantly black schools. The people from those schools that are true track fans can quote names and records back 30 years. Very impressive. When Cory stepped to the line there were black kids to the left and black kids to the right. He was wearing white leggings when that was not in vogue in the track world. He had blonde hair and that shirt with the D on it with the wings coming out of it. The guys in the stands were going crazy. They knew he was going to get his butt whipped. When the gun went off all that anyone saw was his back as he left everyone in the dust. The guys in the stands went wild. Their appreciation for pure athleticism is what the track meet is all about. That is the one performance I will absolutely never forget.

Two pretty memorable ones this year. Donique Flemings 40.96 300 M Hurdles and Victoria Jordan 11.16 100 Meters.

Dale Jenkins of Abilene Christian High School sometime in the early 80's vaulted 17"11 at an invitational meet at ACU, but it was a couple of days after graduation and it didn't go in the HS record books after much discussion. He went on and got close to 19' at ACU.

Probably the most dominant performance ever in the history of Texas HS track was Michael Carter from Dallas Lincoln, who went on to have a multiple Pro Bowl career for the 49ers, threw the shot 81'. No one has even come close to that since. You look in the record books for National HS track and he is 7 or 8 ft further than the next closest. Very few have ever gotten out to 70'.

Another good state track meet performance was last year when Robert Griffin of Copperas Cove set the national record in the 300 hurdles and missed the national record in the 110 hurdles by 100th of a second. This was all as a Jr. He left to go to Baylor at mid-term this year to go through spring training. He recently ran a 50.2 in the 400m hurdles at Baylor in the first meet he ran in following spring training at Baylor after what I've heard was only about a week of practice. Baylor folks tell me that Kirby Freeman better hope that Griffin makes the Olympic team this fall in order for Freeman to get some playing time. Sahen might have more details.

Wasnt there one year when Johnny Lam Jones won the mile relay by himself. The story was told to me so I dont know what year, but I heard he was way behind and came back and won. This was my first year to attend so I guess watching my man Kenneth Turner win the 100 and 200 is my best memory.

Johnny Lam Jones came from about 40 yards back to win the mile relay in 1976. Truly awesome to watch. Every year it is voted the #1 performance all time at the track meet.

As a sidenote, the 200 meter world record of 19.72 was held by Pietro Minea of Italy. Not a country known for sprinters but that record held up for a very long time.
