I was just about to say Fairfield's Gavan Bass won the long jump, but it's already been posted. Congrats to him. I don't know how much of a disadvantage it is (if it is one) but I think it's pretty impressive to win state being only 5'7''.

His best event (well maybe not now that he's the long jump champion) is the 100 m. I can't wait to see how he'll do it that. Lasy year he didn't qualify for state even though he had a much faster time at regionals than several of the runners at state. But that's just how it is. All the sprints and relays are tomorrow right?

I think his other running events were both relays. Heard they had a real good chance to go to state until Piske got sick to day of regionals and couldn't run ... I think they got 4th in one relay though.

It was very exciting. They both missed at 6'9 & were both tied at misses at 6'8 so they did the "jump off". WTG TRENT!! :cheerl:

Our girl high jumper, Caitlin "CoCo" Cave did not place. She missed all her attempts at 5'4. :( She is a junior so I expect her to get back next year! Great experience for her. The Gonzales girl was still in it when I left. I think there were 5 girls still in the race jumping at 5'6. Monahans girl looked real strong.

I don't plan to go back to the field until right before the races. LOL

From the info I have received, Blaine Bassler of West is the repeat 3A pole vault champ with a winning jump of 15' 6". Nowhere near his best, but he pulled a hammy in the 100 meters at Regionals, so I think it affected him a little.

He was a Junior and qualified his Frosh , Soph and JR. year . He has been fighting injuries to his hamstring just about all Track season and did not run in the District meet but Ran at Regionals and today with that said ... Congratulations Stephon on ending your High school career on a positive note and bringing your Senior leadership to the track team this season . Not everyone gets to be a part of 3 State Championships *getting ahead of myself*and having 6 golds 1 silver and 1 bronze to show for it .

New State Record

Holy Crap--I saw this and it blew my mind. That girl that won it absolutely flew down the track. She ended up beating half the 3a boys time-wise. New state record, all qualifications, only ..02 from being a national record. Simply amazing; its days like this when I remember why I love track so much.

Speaking of Reg IV

Congrats on the fine showing guys and gals..... I haven't written down all the winners and medal holders, but it looks like Reg IV had a nice showing!!!!
Having seen the regional meets at both Region III and Region IV, there's really not a comparison in terms of overall talent. From top to bottom, it's Region III hands down...not even close. It's even been a little more lopsided these last couple of years since they took the Sweeny, Wharton, West Columbia district out of IV and put them in III. That district produced some of the best challenges for Cuero. Region III is simply a tougher track region than Region IV, but that doesn't mean that there's any difference in the two who make it to state from each region, especially with Cuero in Region IV. Without you guys, there wouldn't have been much of a showing from Region IV at the state meet. Find the second highest finishing Region IV team...

Next year, it does look like things will a little more even between the regions for track, and we'll be getting our first look at what Region I has to offer. I don't know what's in store, but I don't think any Panther fans or runners will be missing the Region III track meet.

boy I have to say...our guys ran hard, and we had quite a great race in the 4x4. It was so close, and at the very end we were edged out by like .03 or something. But it was from no lack of effort. For all that were there, how about our 2nd leg? Went from 8 to 3 on the homestretch.

Nobody (at least I have not) ever said that Cuero is slow & lacking athletes. What I have said is AS A WHOLE Region 4 does not have AS MANY teams & kids with the speed/athleticism of Regions 2 & 3. It's all about demographics & population bases. Just reality. And I competed (Sweeny alumnus) in both Region 3 & 4 sports too for reference, & have watched them for 30+ years.

Certainly Cuero & some others can run & play with anybody in their classification (football, track). I am referring to depth just like Panther One was too. Region 4 is very good in baseball & softball as a general rule.

(& I know you were kidding anyway)

Region 2 won. The following is a breakdown of points.

Region 2: 16 teams, 182.5 points
Region 3: 17 teams, 165 points
Region 1: 11 teams, 141 points
Region 4: 11 teams, 131.5 points

You can say I'm wrong, but let's see some proof. The problem is you have none. Like it or not, the talent in Regions 2 and 3 is much, much deeper than in the other regions. A big part of this is due to the breakdown of schools. Region 1 has 38, Region 2 has 49, Region 3 has 55, and Region 4 has 40. That in itself is going to make for a more talented field of athletes in the regions with more schoools. Couple that with the schools' demographics, and you've got two really tough track regions, which the results of the state meet clearly shows.

No one is taking anything away from Cuero's accomplishments. Everybody recognizes that they won the meet. But if you take the Gobblers out of Region IV, what are you left with? Without Cuero, Region IV probably would have finished well below 100 points for the meet. How can you argue that it is as good a track region as the others? I'm sure there are plenty of teams in Regions 2 or three that would trade places with Cuero in a heartbeat. They'll take the wind and old track over a loaded field any day. I'd rather be back in Region IV, because it wasn't as tough as Regions 2 and 3. These past two years, the imbalance between the regions was greater than ever. Hopefully the new alignments will help even things out a bit.

I just find even more shocking than even you can't see that. Anyone from Reg. 1 or 4 that can even compeat with your way of thinking is crazy.

Been there, done that - remember I'm from Sweeny. We have been in both Region 3 & 4 over the years many times back & forth. We loved being in Region 4 over Region 3, I can tell you that. No need to be defensive about Cuero. Everybody knows they are a quality program. The question is about DEPTH per region, not individual teams. Comparing Region 3 & Region 4 OVERALL is not even close. Look at the overall results in Austin - not just 1 team or a few athletes (heck Toya Jones is from Refugio for goodness sakes, & we know what he did in hs). I'm talking everybody. Region 4 has some good teams while Region 3 is absolutely loaded year in & year out. 1-2 teams does not make a region better overall than others.

Congrats to Cuero.

I just find even more shocking than even you can't see that. Anyone from Reg. 1 or 4 that can even compeat with your way of thinking is crazy.

You're forgetting a terrific area for athletes over the years: the Golden Triangle & surrounding areas. Put those with the Houston Area kids & it is loaded in all sports. Winning Region 3 is a bear. Lots of kids & teams don't advance that would in other regions. That goes for all sports too. Just reality & luck of the geographic draw/demographics/population bases.

My junior year we won State in basketball (actually won 3/4 years & should have won 4 in a row but choked). Our toughest games were in the Regionals. We got to Austin & just took care of business. This happens regularly if you check it out. There are exceptions, yes, but overall the results don't lie over time.

Leez Louise dude - can't you take some good humor joking for heaven's sake - what I said certainly didn't warrant the "dressing down" you typed - a simple - Congrats would have been nice - certainly what I did for Liberty Hill - even after they beat Cuero this past year - mercy.........

As far as the kid from Graham in the long jump goes, he was also a member of the Graham HS golf team that won Gold at the State Golf tournament. He was scheduled to tee off roughly 1 hour after he was scheduled to jump. The UIL was notified of the problem and their answer was "Tough luck. You can take all 6 of your jumps when your turn comes up if you want or you can scratch." He sacrificed his own glory in the long jump for his golf teammates. He was rewarded with a Gold medal. UIL should have made some better concessions since it was their scheduling snafu that caused the problem. Why in the world would the State golf tournament take place at the same time as the State track meet? That was a huge over-sight by the UIL.
