CROCKETT — After a decade-long absence from the postseason, Joey Solis and the Diboll Lumberjacks were not ready to make an early exit.

Solis had four singles and an RBI and got the win on the mound as the Lumberjacks raced to a big early lead and held on for an 8-6 win to sweep their Class 3A Region III Bi-District best-of-three series with the Mexia Blackcats on Saturday afternoon.

Diboll took advantage of seven Mexia errors to build an 8-1 lead but had to fight until the end against a Mexia squad that refused to quit. The Blackcats scored a run in the fifth inning then added three more in the sixth to cut the margin to 8-5.

Mexia threatened in the last inning as John Spates led off by reaching on an error and Matt Johnson singled to put runners on the corners. However, Alek Gaard, who pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, got a strikeout and a pair of groundouts to end the game and move Diboll into the area round of the playoffs.

Diboll will face Liberty Hill in a best-of-three series starting on Thursday night at 7 at Corsicana High School. The second game of the series will be on Friday night at 7, with a third game, if necessary to be played on Saturday at 1. Friday's and Saturday's games will also be at Corsicana.

Solis played a major factor in getting Diboll to the next round. He pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks to pick up the win.

Gaard pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing four unearned runs on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

Diboll's offense, which was helped by a shaky Mexia defense, gave the Lumberjack pitchers plenty of help, starting with a five-run first inning.

Solis led off the game with a single, went to second on an errant pickoff throw and third when Ketaraus Stanton reached on an error. Solis scored the game's first run on a wild pitch, and Stanton came around to score when Kyle Prescott reached on an error, Mexia's third of the inning.

Prescott was caught stealing before Diboll's bats started to heat up. Cutler Ruby singled and came around to score on a Cody Stifle double to make it 3-0. Faustino Salais was walked and Johnathan Fuentes singled down the right field line to bring in Stifle with the fourth run of the inning.

Salais eventually made the score 5-0 when he scored on Solis' second single of the inning.

The Lumberjacks got back on the board in the fourth inning as Stanton reached on an error, stole second and went to third on a perfect Prescott bunt. Chance Johnson came through with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0.

Mexia finally got on the board in the bottom half of the inning as Ryan Miller had an RBI single to trim the margin to 6-1.

Diboll bounced back with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Salais walked and advanced when Mexia misplayed a Fuentes bunt. Salais came around to score on a wild pitch, and courtesy runner Justin Neyland scored on a Nick Cortines groundout for what seemed like a comfortable 8-1 lead.

But Mexia was not done as it took advantage of four Diboll errors over the final three innings to narrow the margin to 8-6 before the Lumberjacks sealed the win.

Joining Solis in the hit column for Diboll were Fuentes (2 singles, RBI), Prescott (2 singles), Stifle (double. RBI), Salais (double), Cutler Ruby (single) and Cortines (RBI).
