It was my understanding that no one could play before Friday due to TAKS testing? That could cause some problems with all these teams wanting 2 out of 3 and field availability. Let me know what you find out.

Lorena walks past Fairfield, 2-1

Saturday, May 03, 2008

By Brice Cherry

Tribune-Herald youth sports editor

By not playing chase, the Lorena Lady Leopards were able to chase down Fairfield.

Displaying savvy strike-zone awareness, Lorena walked right on by the Lady Eagles, 2-1, in a come-from-behind Class 3A area-round playoff win Friday night at Baylor’s Getterman Stadium.

Lorena (19-12) advances to the region quarterfinals to face District 17-3A rival Robinson at a site and time to be determined. Fairfield, the District 19-3A champion, ends its year at 21-5.

Fairfield figured to string up plenty of zeroes behind ace pitcher Courtney Nelson, Central Texas’ strikeout leader with 276 heading into the night. But Lorena’s hitters managed to keep the bat on their shoulders when Nelson’s riseball sailed high, working five walks and numerous three-ball counts.

“We knew she was a pitcher who threw hard and high,” Lorena coach Rusty Erwin said. “We talked all week about being patient. We didn’t want to make it easy on her by chasing pitches.”

Fairfield put the pressure on early, taking a 1-0 lead after the top of the first. Shortstop Kace Kirgan blooped a one-out single, and later came around to score when Lorena booted a ground ball off the bat of April McAdams.

Fairfield looked as if it might add a second run when Shelby Bayless skied a deep would-be sacrifice fly to center, but after a Lorena appeal the umpires ruled that Becca Lyles left third base early.

Down 1-0, Lorena seemingly needed a big swat to steal away the momentum. What the Lady Leopards got instead was the bunt heard round the Brazos.

In the bottom of the second, Lorena’s Kristie Oliver worked a one-out walk from Nelson. Lady Leopard leftfielder Adrianna Shelton then drew the assignment to bunt Oliver into scoring position. That plan worked out better than expected when Nelson fielded the slow roller and sailed a throw over the head of first baseman Caitlyn Neal into left field. Not only did Oliver come home to score, but the hustling Shelton slid in safely, too.

“It was kind of wild,” Erwin said. “We gave them one, and they gave us two.”

Lorena freshman hurler Taylor Kelm ensured that those runs would hold up by retiring 12 Fairfield batters in a row through the middle innings.

It didn’t hurt that the Lady Leopards flashed some fashionable leather behind her, including a sweet sliding catch from centerfielder Kaylyn Vranich and a running over-the-shoulder snag by leftfielder Shelton in the third inning.

“Adrianna Shelton, that was just a huge catch,” Erwin said. “I thought that really changed the game. . . . And then we get the one from (Vranich), who’s out there on one leg after pulling her hamstring on Sunday. I don’t know how she got to that one, because she can’t run.”

Fairfield pushed the winning run into scoring position in the seventh, as Jessica Gallegos scampered to second base on a Jessica Smith throwing error following a wicked-hop grounder.

But Kelm got Riley Jo Davidson to foul out to end the threat — and the game.

Next up for Lorena is the 17-3A champion Robinson Rockettes, who downed Rusk, 4-1, on Friday.

“We actually wanted to play Robinson,” Erwin said. “They’re our rival, and it should be fun.”

HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP: Robinson softball takes free passes to down Rusk, 4-1

Saturday, May 03, 2008

From staff reports

CORSICANA — The Robinson softball team’s patience paid off as the Rockettes walked past Rusk on Friday in area-round playoff action.

Robinson rallied for three runs in the top of the second inning — two on bases-loaded walks — and defeated the Lady Eagles, 4-1.

The Rockettes (27-5) advance to the regional quarterfinals to play district-rival Lorena (18-12) at a time and place to be determined.

Alex Humphries ignited Robinson’s rally in the second with a double that drove in Maria Vicinais. From there, the Rockettes used sharp eyes as the Rusk starting pitcher began to struggle.

Miranda Villarreal and Ashton Feight each drew bases-loaded walks that boosted the Rockettes’ lead to 3-0.

“Their pitcher threw real well, but we were patient enough,” Robinson coach Bobby Cervenka said. “That one inning she was struggling with her control and we were able to take advantage.”

Robinson’s Hannah White held Rusk to a run on four hits and struck out six.

Robinson defeated Lorena twice in district play as the Rockettes went undefeated in 17-3A.

But Cervenka said his team will see a hot bunch of Lady Leopards.

“We have to look at it like another playoff game,” he said. “It’s going to be a tough game because they’re playing really well right now.”

.......

Huntington 3, Gatesville 0: In Fairfield, Huntington broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the sixth inning to eliminate Gatesville from the 3A Region III playoffs.
