i was at our local course yesterday (legend cc in stephenville) and there were high school kids running around all over so i asked the GM what was going on and he said they had a regional tournament there every year....this course is TERRIBLE and if i were a coach or player who had to play it, i would be PISSED....the UIL definitely let the kids down on this one....

2 days........ 1st time in 4 years I haven't gone to watch .. kinda weird for me :p I look for Medina Valley to take 1st - their 'B' team just might take 2nd - they were just a few strokes behind Cuero last year. That's ok - they'll be in 4A next year again ;) Cuero lost 4 of the 5 players to graduation last year and have a crew of young players but I got my fingers and toes crossed that Donovan from Cuero can shoot good enough to make it to State as an Individual Medalist

Diboll had a freshman boy(Wesley McClain) last year who missed the state tourney by a couple of shots. Maybe he can get it done this time around.

A lil' 5a shout out, watch out for a sophomore girl from Lufkin, Hannah Arnold, who won 15-5a this year. I watched her growing up since 2002 while working at the country club. Doesn't surprise me that she's doing well. Good luck to her.

Good luck to all participants.

H.S. golf: Three's a charm for Medina Valley

Web Posted: 04/23/2008 12:27 AM CDT

Pat Turner
Special to the San Antonio Express-News

Medina Valley coach Randy Mann thought it was special to take one team to the Class 3A state golf tournament a year ago.

This year, Mann will get to see what it feels like to have three teams going.

Medina Valley made it possible by dominating Tuesday's final round of the Class 3A Region IV tournament at Lozano Golf Club in Corpus Christi.

The defending 3A champion Panthers won the boys title with a 583 total, and the Medina Valley 'B' team also qualified after finishing second with a 636.

Medina Valley's girls used a strong second-round surge to ease past Yoakum.

The 3A state tournament is May 8-9 at the Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin.

"I don't know if this has ever happened before, but I sure would love to find out," Mann said.

Medina Valley's 'A' team also had the top five individual boys scores. Stanton Tondre earned medalist honors with a 144. Curtis Reed was one stroke back, followed by Randall Rodgers at 147, Kyle Emerson at 148 and Brandon Haby at 151.

Matthew Van Winkle led Medina Valley 'B' with a 153.

Jacob Torans of Devine also qualified for state with a 152.

In the girls division, Medina Valley's Abby Russell took medalist honors with a 164.

Article from the ARN.

http://reporternews.com/news/2008/apr/22/snyder-needs-comeback-to-keep-streak-alive/

MIDLAND -- Success at the Region I-3A girls golf tournament has been a way of life for the Snyder Lady Tigers longer than any of the current team members have been in school.

The team will have to make up a good bit of ground in today's final round to continue the program's streak of consecutive appearances in the state tournament.

Snyder, which has qualified for state the past 14 years, shot 323 on Tuesday in the opening round of I-3A tournament at Nueva Vista Golf Club, finishing the day fourth in the team standings and 15 strokes out of a state berth.

The top two teams and top two individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the Class 3A state tournament, scheduled for May 8-9 at Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin.

Defending state champion Andrews, which beat Snyder for the District 3-3A title on the Nueva Vista course earlier this month, leads the team standings at 302 with the Monahans A team second at 308. Seminole is third at 320.

"You always hope in years when you need the tradition that that will be enough to get you through," Snyder coach Ricky Hunter said. "We're not out of it yet. We've got a long way to claw back, but it's doable. "We've got to fall back on the fact that we've got a little bit of

tradition and hope that the girls come out and find a way to make it happen."

Allison Sharrock led Snyder with a 78 followed by Kelby Seal at 79. Tatum Norwood shot 82 and Kayli Brewster carded an 84.

"The course was set up for good scores," Hunter said. "The weather was perfect. You couldn't ask for anything better ... the other teams played well. They took advantage of the conditions and we didn't."

Sweetwater's Ashley Timm is in contention for an individual berth after shooting 72, putting her in a four-way tie for third. Seminole's Samantha Soto leads the medalist standings with a 70, followed by Shelbye Hill of Monahans at 71.

Timm paced Sweetwater to a 337 team score, good for fifth in the team standings. Sarah Cumbie added a 78 for the Lady Mustangs.

The Wylie girls shot 344 to finish the day ninth in the team standings.

Karin Swedenborg led the Lady Bulldogs with a 77, followed by Brittany Alvarez with an 86 and Ashleigh Alvarez with an 88. Kandace Cooper closed out the scoring with a 93, while Allison Cariker shot 99.

And another...

http://reporternews.com/news/2008/apr/22/wylie-boys-golf-team-heading-to-state/

MIDLAND -- For Trey Bearden and the Wylie Bulldogs, it was well worth the wait.

The start of Tuesday's final round of the Region I-3A boys golf tournament was delayed an hour because of fog. But the Wylie contingent emerged as state qualifiers at Nueva Vista Golf Club.

Bearden shot his way into a playoff for the medalist title before losing on the third extra hole, while the Bulldogs maintained their hold on second place in the team standings.

The Graham Steers will join Wylie at the Class 3A state tournament, scheduled for May 8-9 at Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin.

The Bulldogs shot 294, a nine-stroke improvement from Monday's first round, to finish at 597. Wylie entered the day just a shot ahead of Bridgeport with six other teams within 14 strokes. The Bulldogs finished eight strokes ahead of third-place Andrews.

"As many teams that were within striking distance of second, the guys did a great job of being aggressive and playing like they had nothing to lose," Wylie coach Terry Barrington said. "We talked about that coming up to this tournament, and I think the scores exemplified that. I don't think you can shoot those kinds of scores playing tentatively or playing to not lose."

Bearden led the way for Wylie on Tuesday with a 70, while David Mattson shot 74, a 14-stroke improvement from Monday. Alex Curnutt and Chris Rodriquez both shot 75 as the Bulldogs posted one of four sub-300 team rounds in the tournament.

Bearden, a freshman, and defending I-3A medalist Tucker Hutto of Levelland both finished at 2-under after Hutto shot 75 on Tuesday.

"I did pretty good today," Bearden said. "I hope I'll win it the next three years. I won the district as a freshman, so second at regional is OK."

Bearden was 2-under at the turn and picked up another birdie on No. 11. He followed with bogeys on 13 and 15 before birdies in 16 and 17.

"I putted very well today and hit a lot of fairways and greens," he said. "Usually, I'm a person that comes from behind. I usually don't do very well the first day, then I'll shoot really good. I do a whole lot better under pressure."

Bearden and Hutto both made par on the first two playoff holes. Hutto then sank a 30-foot birdie putt after driving the green on No. 3, a 361-yard par-4. Bearden left his birdie attempt a foot short.

"Usually, people don't outdrive me by that much," Bearden said. "I'm usually ahead of everyone else, but (Hutto) pretty well crushed that last one. I lipped out a birdie on the first hole and so did he. I'll take getting beat by a birdie if that's what it is."

Graham shot 295 to win the team title by eight strokes. The Steers were the only team to break 300 both days.

"We played solid," Graham coach Jeff Williamson said. "Everyone kept it at 4-over or below, and that's what we're after."

The Steers were led by Johnny Antle's 72, which put him in a three-way tie for third at 1-under with Borger's Will Paulsell, who had the day's low round with a 67, and Argyle's Boliver, who shot 70. Paulsell defeated Boliver on the fourth hole of a playoff to determine the second medalist qualifier.

Drew McGee added a 73 for Graham with Taylor Chamness shooting 74. Spencer Sims and Taylor Thompson both shot 76 in the final round.

Snyder shot 306 to finish tied for seventh. Wes Van Roeder led the Tigers with a 72, finishing tied for ninth at 2-over.

Sweetwater stayed in 14th place in the team standings after shooting 334.

Blayne Street of Breckenridge, who entered the day two shots out of the lead, shot 80 on Tuesday to fall to 13th in the medalist standings, while Clyde's Kelci Gonzalez shot 73 and tied for 14th.
