Scores from contender's game on Friday, 4/18:
Columbia 4, Sweeny 1
Columbus 2, Needville 0

Standings thru 4/18 games:

1) Columbia 11-3
1) Sweeny 11-3
3) Needville 10-3 (one game remaining vs Stafford)
4) Columbus 10-4

One district game remaining:
Sat, 4/19, 10am, Needville (10-3) @ Stafford (3-10)

If Needville beats Stafford:

* 3-way tie between Needville, Columbia, Sweeny at 11-3.

Columbia 2-0 vs Sweeny
Sweeny 2-0 vs Needville
Needville 2-0 vs Columbia
(head-to-head therefore does not break tie)

My understanding of the 3-team playoff:
* Columbia won coin toss for bye and home field
* Game 1: Sweeny vs Needville @ Columbia, Mon, 4/21, 5pm
* Game 2: Game 1 winner vs Columbia immediately following
* Winner of Game 2 is district champion
* If Columbia loses Game 2, then they play Loser of Game 1 to determine 2nd/3rd.
* If Columbia wins Game 2, then winner of Game 1 is 2nd, loser of Game 1 is 3rd

If Needville loses to Stafford:
* Columbia and Sweeny tie for 1st at 11-3 and Columbia is district champion due to 2-0 record over Sweeny
* Needville and Columbus tie for 3rd at 10-4 and will play a tie-breaker game to determine 3rd/4th

I think I have this right!!

Sweeny lost to Sealy I think. Monday will be a playoff between Columbia, Sweeny and Needville in West Columbia. Columbia has a Bye if I understand correctly so it will be Sweeny against Needville and then Columbia will play the winner of that game.

Congrats to the Lady Necks that was a great game!

Columbus beat Needville tonight 2-0

As of 4/18
Columbia 11-3
Sweeny 11-3
Needville 10-3 one more game to play
Columbus 10-4

If Needville loses tomorrow to Stafford, then Columbus and Needville will be tied for 3rd.

If Needville wins tomorrow, Columbus is out and there will be a 3 way tie.
Monday schedule in West Columbia
Sweeny vs Needville @ 5:00
winner will play Columbia @ 7:00

OOPS... Coxxjj beat me to the information.Sorry for the duplication. :D :D

Congratulations to Sealy Ladies for winning their final game of the season against Wharton 9-4.

**Sealy beat Sweeny at Sweeny, then later Sweeny beat Sealy at Sealy.**

This is one crazy district. WC has Sweeny's #, Needville has WC's #, & Sweeny has Needville's #.

Now Columbus is making a late run. Will be a fight to the finish & lots of tiebreakers/district playoffs involved too.

Yep. Region III has won the most titles at 6, followed by Region II with 5, Region IV with 2 (the most recent) and Region I has 1 title.

Good stuff. It is always a good thing when a distirct is competitive. I was looking at the archives because I haven't really been following softball very long and Bellville has done well in Region III & IV. Kudos to the Big Red program!!

I wasn't living in Sinton when the Sinton girls made it to state, in 1999 or 2001, but they never scored a run!!! :(

Hopefully this year our girls can fix that problem the other teams seemed to have! ;)

I may be wrong, but, I think the year WC won it, we were in region 4...

g$$

When Sweeny won it (& went to State another year too), I think we were Region 4. I could be wrong & don't exactly remember. This was right when softball became a UIL sport & those girls had come thru LL together & dominated (in fact, Brazoria County had Sweeny, Angleton, Pearland, & maybe Bwood all win titles in the 1st few years, followed later by WC of course).

Sweeny has bounced between Regions 3 & 4 for years. Somebody check that for me please on when Sweeny won 3A softball title...

No, in 1996 when Sweeny won the state title, they were in Region III. I looked up my records page on my website which I copied from the UIL page. (Bellville was from Region IV that year.)

Thanks 18, I knew you would have it. I lose track of when when we were Region 3 or Region 4 since it changes about every 2 years! My dad was very proud of that team because he got the charter for LL softball in Sweeny. Then they went on to win it all in 1996 & almost another one too.

Brazoria County has fared very well on the softball titles since the mid 1990s.

too bad Columbus didnt have a chance to get in this mini playoff tournament

They are deserving as well since there is a lot of parity among these four teams

No one is really better than the other that much

It just came down to this last week of games and Columbus couldn't quite pull it out

3&2count

Columbus was in every game with a chance to win.

1st Round
Columbia 1 Columbus 0
Sweeny 1 Columbus 0
Needville 2 Columbus 0

2nd round
Columbia 0 Columbus 3
Sweeny 2 Columbus 0
Needville 0 Columbus 2

They played the top three teams and were in it every step of the way.

This was a very competitive district and it came down to the last day of district.

This district will be different next year with Columbus and Sealy leaving.

District 25 will now look like this. (this will be a very tough district next year)
Bellville
Columbus
Giddings
La Grange
Sealy
Smithville

District 26 will look like this
Brookshire Royal
Needville
Stafford
Sweeny
Columbia
Wharton

Not to be obstinate, but Columbus had 14 district ballgames to prove they belonged in the top 3 overall. I realize they played a lot of close games, but the point remains they came up short. Obviously they were in the hunt to the end, but no cigar this year.

The top 3 deserve it & will play it off Monday night for seedings. They earned that right too. Best of luck to all.

I believe this is one of the most competitive districts around.

Will be a little difference next year with Sealy and Columbus in a different district/

Columbia and Sweeny will lose a few key players to graduation.

Needville has a lot of underclassmen returning.

Sweeny does not have a single senior, I think. Regardless, they are very young. Mainly freshmen & sophs are key players, with a couple of stud kids coming from junior high/club ball from what I have been told.

With girls though, you never know. Guys mature later usually while girls peak earlier & develop other interests. You never know year to year.

Like last year, there were more than 3 teams that would have represented our district well in the playoffs.

Some of those close games Columbus played went extra innings as well.

We knew a couple of years ago that the district would get really tough when two playoff-caliber teams were added (Sealy and Columbus) to an already tough district. So the same thing will occur when Sealy and Columbus move to District 25.

Next year should be promising for Needville as well as we are losing just 2 to graduation and have several who were on the bench this year that deserved to start but should be able to step in and fill the gaps.

Best of luck to a certain WC senior continuing her playing days in ARK too. She has been a joy to watch & a very polite young lady too. Just an outstanding career...& it's not over yet. All the best to her.

No doubt, 25-3A just got tougher & 26-3A just got a little easier starting next year. Sealy & Columbus are quality programs.
