The Superintendent of the Jasper Independent School District, Butch Dean, has announced his plans to retire at the end of this school year. Dean said he decided earlier this month that it was a good time to step down and take it easy. At 60 years old, Dean who has worked in education for almost 30 years said he plans to spend much of his time fishing.

Dean first worked for the district in 1971 as a teacher. However, a few years later in 1977, he left the teaching profession to take a job at Jasper Federal Savings and Loan. However, in 1988 he rejoined the district where he served as a Director of Finance and Operations. In December of 2006 following the resignation of Dr. Eddie Dunn, Dean was appointed as Interim Superintendent and a short time later he was asked to serve permanently in the position.

Sources within the school district had said that Dean might step down due to his health. However, while Dean did admit that he had recently underwent some tests to address issues with his heart, he said that he was in good health but decided to relax. He said that he plans to stay in the Jasper area.

The board of trustees of the school district is expected to meet in the very near future to begin the process for the selection of new superintendent.
