Can someone explain a defensive "technique?" It seems like 2 and 7 are the most common I hear about.

1: inside the guard
2: head up with the guard
3: outside the guard

and so on

This is according to the "3 tech" that lives here. ;)

I thought it might be, but as all good Jeopardy fans know, you don't give out the answer while the music is playing. ;)

Thats the best I could draw it up....first number of the group is inside eye....middle number is head up....third number outside eye

Back when my boys were playing, the coaches always had a "Mother's Day" coaching seminar.

They would line us up where our sons played and explain what each position did!!

Then they fed us....YAY!!!:D

Bum Phillips is credited with the numbering system, but it can vary depending on coach & scheme (use of i for inside shade, etc.).

We always played it like this (adding to above):

EX: 7 is inside shade of TE, 6 is head-up, then 9 is outside TE, 8 is in space or on air. This is the one that confuses some regarding the 7 tech, etc.

LB depth alignment is the same, add a zero (20, 40, etc.)

Here I'll help you, this is pretty universal in football:

DL
A (zero technique) would mean a nose tackle aligned nose-to-nose with a center.

(1 technique) means the defensive lineman is lined up in the middle of the A gap (between C & G).

(2 technique) means defensive lineman is nose-to-nose with the offensive guard.

(3 technique) defensive lineman is line up in the middle of the B gap (between G & T) or outside shade of the guard. He is responsible for maintaining outside leverage and not letting himself get hooked or reached blocked by the offense.

(4 technique) means defensive lineman is lined up nose-to-nose with the offensive tackle.

(5 technique) means that the defensive lineman has his nose on the outside shoulder of the offensive tackle.

(6 technique) is nose-to-nose with the offensive tight end.

(7 technique) means the defensive lineman has his nose on the inside shoulder of the offensive tight end.

(8 technique) means that the defensive lineman is aligned on air outside the outside shoulder of the offensive tight end.

(9 technique) means that the defensive lineman has his nose on the outside shoulder of the offensive tight end.

LBs
(10 technique) definition same as 1 technique only at linebacker depth.

(20 technique) definition same as 2 technique only at linebacker depth.

(30 technique) definition same as 3 technique only at linebacker depth.

(40 technique) definition same as 4 technique only at linebacker depth.

(50 technique) definition same as 5 technique only at linebacker depth.

(60 technique) definition same as 6 technique only at linebacker depth.

(70 technique) definition same as 7 technique only at linebacker depth.

(80 technique) definition same as 8 technique only at linebacker depth.

(90 technique) definition same as 9 technique only at linebacker depth.

...again, this can vary slightly at times. Sorry, don't know how to draw a visual for you on here.
