DCTF names the 2007 high school football coaches of the year

04/11/2008
DALLAS — Following a 13-2 run to the state championship in 2006, Liberty Hill would have a hard time out-doing that success in 2007. Yet the Panthers did, going a perfect 14-0 in winning back-to-back state titles.

For that effort, Liberty Hill head coach Jerry Vance is one of seven recipients of the 2007 GearBoss Coaches of the Year.

Vance joins the six fellow award winners announced Thursday by the staff of Dave Campbell's Texas Football, which for decades has annually selected each classification's top coaching performance.

2007 Texas Football/GearBoss Coaches of the Year

5A: George Hermann, Pflugerville Hermann helped the Panthers rebound in a big way. Following a 3-7 campaign in 2006, Pflugerville emerged from a difficult District 14-5A with a 7-3 record, where it then won five playoff games before falling to Katy, 28-7 in the 5A Division II final. The 12-4 record was a nine-game turnaround from the 2006.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4A: Don Drake, McKinney Boyd McKinney Boyd's 2007 season was the second-ever for the program -- and also the second for Drake as a head coach. And despite an 0-10 record in 2006, Drake led Boyd to unthinkable heights in 2007, guiding the Broncos to a 9-4 record and quarterfinals in 4A Division I.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3A: Jerry Vance, Liberty Hill Vance helped Liberty Hill prove the 2006 season, where the Panthers caught fire by winning its final nine games (including the DII title), was no fluke. Liberty Hill ran the table in 2007, going 14-0, culminating with the Division I state title. Liberty Hill beat every opponent by double figures to boot.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2A: Keith Wright, Farmersville Despite setbacks in the season opener and in Week 4, Wright helped Farmersville roll to nine straight wins to reach their first ever state final. Standing in the way was two-time defending champion Tatum, yet Farmersville emerged victorious in OT, 27-24, to give the Farmers the 2A Division I title.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1A: Patrick Corcoran, Munday Coming off a season where Munday missed the playoffs for the fourth-straight year, Corcoran and his preseason unranked Moguls swept the regular season, going 10-0. Munday didn't slow down, winning five straight to capture the 1A Division II title game with a 26-6 win over Bremond.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6-Man: Mike Bigham, Matador Motley County Though Motley County finished 8-2 in 2006, the Matadors missed the playoffs that year. They more than made up for it in 2007, going 14-1 and winning the Division II title in a 44-38 thriller over Woodson. Just two seasons ago, Motley County had finished 3-7.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Private Schools: Robin Kirk, Houston St. Pius X St. Pius entered the 2007 season missing several key pieces, including four starters lost to the college Division I ranks. And despite two mid-season losses, Kirk helped the Panthers rebound to defend their TAPPS Division I crown, beating Fort Worth Nolan 38-14.

Congrats to Jerry Vance on another well-deserved recognition.

We've known for a long time he was great. I don't know what took everyone else so long to figure it out!
