the pitcher takes a shot off the head..... he is ok though. he did get up and walk off the field

It can happen, esp. with aluminum bats & exit speeds (which have been lessened with -3 enforcement & rules). It can happen with wood too, remember Billy Wagner & Matt Clement? Scary stuff, glad he is ok.
