SHS golf team drops to second in district

Written by Staff Reports

Despite a 23-shot improvement over the first round and the advantage of playing on its home course, Sweetwater’s lead disappeared Wednesday at the District 7-3A boys golf tournament.
But the Mustangs are still in great shape for a trip to the regional tournament after two rounds of the 54-hole event, which wraps up next Tuesday.
Sweetwater is in second place with a 671 total after shooting a 324 — a score that was better than every other school except Wylie — at Sweetwater Country Club.
Wylie shot a blazing 302, however, to wipe out Sweetwater’s eight-shot lead after the first round. Wylie has a two-round total of 657, and hosts the final 18-hole leg Tuesday at Fairway Oaks Country Club in Abilene.
Clyde shot a 330 Wednesday and is in third place with a 708 total, while Sweetwater’s No. 2 team — which had been in third after Round 1 — shot 364 and is now in fourth with a 740 total. Completing the field are Breckenridge (747), Comanche (771), Wylie No. 2 (774) and Breckenridge No. 2 (879).
Sweetwater’s Jake Lawrence dropped out of the medalist lead Wednesday, but still has the best score of any Mustang golfer with a 166 total. Lawrence, who shot a second-round 84, trails five golfers in the medalist race but is only four shots behind the new leader, Wylie’s Chris Rodriguez (84-78-162).
Rodriguez has a one-stroke lead over three golfers who are tied for second place — Alex Cornutt of Wylie, Blayne Street of Breckenridge and Kelci Gonzales of Clyde. Trey Bearden, whose 73 matched Cornutt for the lowest score Wednesday, is in fifth place at 165.
Sweetwater’s Cameron Studdard (88-80) and Cameron Lawrence (89-79) are tied for seventh in the medalist race with 168 totals, while Craig Corley (81-173) and Kameron Pugh (86-174) complete the Mustangs’ No. 1 team.
Sweetwater’s No. 2 team is led by Clint Jay, who has rounds of 91 and 87 for a 178 total. Also on the team are Matt Hord, 98-88-186; Bowie Lee, 89-99-198; Brent Aiken, 98-93-191; and Jace Bentle, 98-96-194.
Competing as medalists for Sweetwater are Zach Wetsel, 98-102-200; Hunter Foust, 112-107-219; and Tim Moore, 121-106-227.
The top two teams, as well as any individual placing in the top six who is not on one of the top two teams, will advance to the Region I-3A tournament. It will be played April 21-22 at Nueva Vista Golf Club in Midland.
