The Sweetwater Mustang boys tennis team won the University Interscholastic League District 7-3A team trophy Wednesday in an unprecedented win over Abilene Wylie on their home courts.
The Mustangs won points in doubles, singles and mixed doubles to win the trophy.
The Mustang squad took first and second in boys singles with a win by No. 1 seed Jeraco Cabrera over teammate Christian Hill, 6-0, 6-1. Hill defended his spot in a playback situation against Wylie’s Brady Lemen, 6-3, 6-4, to retain his right to advance to the regional tournament.
Tatum Harrison and Zach Gill beat Wylie’s Campbell and Hartgraves in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, in the boys doubles final, after cruising through their first two matches. Harrison-Gill beat Breckenridge’s Patterson-Ward, 6-0, 6-0, and Wylie’s No. 2 team, Fischer-Adams 6-0, 6-2, to reach the final.
The mixed doubles team of Cheyenne Belew and Austin Dahar placed third over teammates Cameron Dahar and Mallory Ashford to also contribute to the boys team win. Belew-Dahar beat Breckenridge 6-1, 6-0 before running into Davis-Moore of Wylie. Dahar-Ashford beat Edwards-Strickland of Breckenridge, 6-0, 6-0, before meeting the No. 1 seed, Wylie’s Bloomer-Kierstead.
The Sweetwater teams fell to the Wylie teams in the mixed before playing each other for the third spot.
In the girls doubles final, senior Ashley Jones and sophomore Hanna Hunter faced the 2007 3A defending state champion, Cramer and Cramer of Wylie.
“It was so close. We played so, so tough. That first set, we were the big dogs. It was quite the upset,” said Sweetwater coach Sylvia Sims. “Then we went to 3-3 in the second set before they started pulling ahead. We just didn’t maintain the intensity of the match at that point.”
Cramer-Cramer ended up winning, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0.
“To take a set off of the state champions says a lot,” said Sims. “We look forward to playing them again.”
Allie Myers ended up the tournament with a third place finish in girls singles over teammate Jessica Bond. Quincy Reddic and Bryan Bernal also placed fourth.
“Overall, it was a great tournament,” said Sims. “We got six out. Won two divisions, won the boys team trophy. The girls played great. Life is good.”
