If that 40 time is correct that is impressive for an 8th grader.

I saw an 8th grade basketball team at a primetime tourney a couple months back that had a kid that was 6'7" and one that was 6'5". Neither was skinny.

So he's 15 in the 8th grade? Looks like academics might not be first on his priority list.

Lots of kids get held back before they even start school. Its not unusual for kids to be 15 in the 8th grade. I know several and I believe it gives them an edge academically, athletically and emotionally.

4.49 is smoking at 200+ lbs. He really is barely 15 so that is about right for a kid that maybe was "red shirted"

These stats are, what I would call, nice. Not phenominal but with the proper training and diet and coach he could possibly start for the Celina JV's his Junior year.;) ;) :D

I don't know, their towel boy has been looking strong as of late. Look for him to be the biggest contender for a starting spot.

I turned 15 in Oct of my 8 th Grade year, Never been held back, and never failed, didn't have a problem with grades, thanks to Aldine ISD, before the move to the Big MISD!

15 in the 8th grade (in Marlin) was probably not "held back" before he started school. Just a hunch.

Couldn't have beaten Centerville, with home field advantage, and leading with 8 seconds left, and a questionable pass interference call. Naw, J J wouldn't have helped!, but Connally has a Junior coming back from this year's squad in hoops, so I guess Fairfield will be home again next year.

Just for comparison; This is from the Mississippi HS Activities Association (MISSHSAA).

Any pupil who becomes 19 years of age prior to August 1 shall be ineligible for interschool competition. A FINE OF $1000 WILL
BE ASSESSED ANY SCHOOL THAT PLAYS A STUDENT TOO OLD.

I bet it is the same in most if not all states.

I agree with Gary here, those will drop when he has some people timing him that dont want those times to happen. When there is a more realistic watch, he will probably experience a huge drop in time. Still, thats pretty awesome, even if it drops to a 4.7. At over 200 lbs, thats amazing for an eighth grader. I know that in Bandera we have an eighth grader that at around 5'10 can slam a basketball all sorts of crazy. Not sure on his bench and such but he is a good athlete.

Bottom line is, 4.49 hand held by a jr high coach will turn into AT LEAST a 4.65 if not 4.7 on an accutrack timer.

People think 4.49 is actually something that happens a lot. It doesn't. Look at the NFL combine. There aren't all that many running backs running in the 4.4s. Don't give me that crap about an 8th grader (even if he IS old enough to have grandchildren) running a legit 4.49.

You are correct. I recently had this rgument on the Old Coaches board. Out of 400 + players at the NFL combine only 98 ran a time less than 4.59. My brother is a coach at a D1 school and out of 85 scholarship players he has only 17 that run 4.59 or better. And this is at a school that is well know for their speed. All that said, it wouldn't be impossible for an 8th grader to run that fast, just rare. Especially if he was carrying a grandchild!

I gotta say, I was surprised also at the kids I heard were so "fast" at the state seven on seven tournament. Alot of the guys were out running 40's against Reggie Bush's time, it was electronically timed. They had lights going to show where he would be or something along those lines. Most kids could not break 4.6. I have to take this opportunity to brag on one of my teammates here. Franklin Brown from Bandera ran a 4.45 (if I remember correctly) three times and was by far the fastest time there. He did it once in socks on a grass surface too. There were kids bragging about their 4.4 times that couldnt get past 4.7. It was really a funny sight.

A freak would be Amobi Okoye who was 15 his senior year of high school and played as a true freshman at Louisville at age 16, He was then drafted by the Texans at age 19. He'll be 21 this June.

Brock Fitzhenry was 15 in the 8th grade and turned 19 this past Sept or Oct. It's common these days, especially with coaches' children.

Thanks Rockdale80. When I think about ages of kids I forget that he was actually 15 all football season and most of basketball season along with several others. Actually, there were several sophomores here that had to catch a ride to practice due to no license to drive.

Thanks again, and tonight this class will compete as a JV track team in Caldwell.

This is just an observation and in no way a slam on this young man. He is obviously a great athlete with a great future. Over the past ten years or so it has been my observation that these types of kids ( those who are much older than the others in their grade) have great high school careers and then do not live up to expectations in college. I have talk with several college football coaches and most of them have similiar philosophies as to why this is. These types of kids grow up being the oldest, biggest, and badest in their class their whole lives and never really have to fight or compete just to earn a spot or have success. It has always been easy for them. In some cases they have already physically matured in the early teens also. When they go to college and all of a sudden they are not the biggest, strongest, or fastest they have a hard time adjusting. I'm sure there are some exceptions but I have seen this happen many times over the past ten years. These same coaches also said that when recruiting sometimes realize that their's not much upside to them either. Like I said, there are some exceptions but this is just my observation.
