Sinton scores 10 runs on just six hits in win

Falfurrias appeared to be in total control of Tuesday night's non-district showdown against rival Sinton.

It didn't last.

The Pirates scored five runs in the bottom of the second en route to an 10-3 victory in front of 631 fans at Whataburger Field. Sinton managed only six hits, but took advantage of three errors and 11 walks by the Jerseys to improve to 13-4 overall.

"They gifted us some runs, especially in the second inning," Sinton coach Gene Kasprzyk said. "We didn't hit the ball well. They just gave us a lot of opportunities. They made a few mistakes and we took advantage of them."

Falfurrias (5-7-1) and Sinton have played for the Region IV-3A championship the past two seasons. The Jerseys advanced to the state tournament in 2006, while the Pirates made it last year.

Despite Tuesday's outcome, Kasprzyk expects the two teams to meet in the postseason.

"That's a great program with a lot of tradition," Kasprzyk said of the Jerseys. "They're young, but they're going to be OK. Hopefully we'll make the playoffs and run into them somewhere down the line."

Falfurrias coach David Salinas hopes the Jerseys use the game as a learning experience.

"We go back a long time," Salinas said of the rivalry. "This is how we get prepared. It's always good to play against Gene and his bunch."

Falfurrias took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Ryan Regalado drove in Lando Guerra with a single to right. The Jerseys made it a three-run advantage in the top of the second on an RBI double by John Zuniga and a bases-loaded walk by Guerra.

Then the Pirates took over.

Ociel Martinez and Shane Segovia each had an RBI in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to 3-2. Ryan Cantu and Martinez then scored on a fielding error to take the lead for good.

Segovia capped the scoring in the inning when he trotted home on a balk. Leading 5-3, Sinton never looked back.

"I don't know if it helped shift the momentum," Kasprzyk said. "Obviously it's nicer to play from ahead than behind, so it helped some with our confidence. When a team gives you something you have to take it."

Sinton added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth when Roy Perez reached on an error and scored on a wild pitch. The Pirates weren't done yet, either.

Cruz Rivas, who went the distance to pick up his fourth win, came through with a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth. Cantu added a two-run single to give the Pirates a 10-3 lead heading into the top of the seventh.
