I'm sure it was, but when was 4A created? Are there any teams in 3A now that were 3A when 3A was the largest classification?

I dunno.

WOS would know.

I know Sweetwater for 3A when it was 4A when we won state.

3A has never been the largest classification. Back in 1950 there was a City Class then a 2A and 1A .. the next year in 1951, there was a class 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A.

The first Class 3A State Championship: Breckenridge 20, Temple 14 ... Breckenridge would repeat the next year with a win over Temple 38-20.

Hope that answers your question. :D

3A and 4A came in to existence simultaneously so 3A has never been the largest classification.... here are the enrollment cutoffs over the years.... the highest upper limit of enrollment 3A has ever had was 1259 in the 1978 realignment. The lowest was in 1980 at 614.

Schools with enrollment between 580 and 614 have always fallen within the 3A enrollment range since the classification began in 1951.

So, in say, 1950... was Brownwood in 2A? or CityClass? Do any of ya'll have any records from then?

What's amazing is how much Texas has exploded in population in just the past 50 years. In 1951 when 4A was first put in to place as the largest classification the lower limit for enrollment to be in the largest classification was only 850.

There were only 52 schools in the entire state that qualified as being 4A and there were only 51 who were large enough to be considered 3A that year. That makes only 103 high schools with enrollments larger than 450 in the entire state.

As of 2008 there are close to 90 high schools in the greater Houston area alone that have enrollments larger than 2000.

The district and classification are in the top left next to each year. Brownwood was in District 5 in the 2A classification in 1950.

The City Conference Class consisted of large "inner-city" schools from Fort Worth, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio divided in to 4 districts with each city having it's own district.

Back when 4A was the largest classification, there were also class B schools who were the smallest classification of 11 man football, but there were also 8 man football teams which many people dont remember, or never knew. I remember Sweetwater hosting the 8 man state championship at least a couple times in the mid 70s. I guess when they dissolved 8 man football, some of those teams went 6 man, and some went class B or 1A. Class B and 8 man may have been dissolved the same year, I dont know. Maybe WOS87 knows.

Official U.I.L. sponsored 8-man football was discontinued after the 1975 season. Class B continued through the 1979 season.

So I assume 1980 was the first year for 5A?

The first game of 1960 against San Angelo Central was Gordon Wood's first game. Brownwood was a 3A nobody and Central was a powerhouse in 4A. I've heard stories that Central was even ranked #1 in the preseason poll for 4A that season, I don't know how true that is, as they weren't the state champs the year before. Maybe WOS has some info on that as well? But regardless, the story goes that Brownwood probably shouldn't have even shown up for that game, but walked away with a big win in San Angelo, and Wood won his first state title with the Lions in his first year at Bwd that season.
