The first game

In late fall of 1978, 24-year-old Joe Lombard sat behind the wheel of a bus and drove the Nazareth Swiftettes to Hartley to coach his first girls basketball game.

Hartley defeated Nazareth, 34-33, in Lombard's coaching debut.

"I not only lost the varsity game, I coached and lost the junior varsity game, too," Lombard said. "And then I was the bus driver. On the way back to Nazareth I was thinking what have I gotten myself into."

In Lombard's second game he guided Naz to a 67-25 win against Sudan, recording the first of his 1,000 wins.

Superstitions

Of course, hard work and dedication to the sport of basketball built the foundation for Lombard's 1,000 wins.

But along the way he has been known to wear certain clothing for good luck.

In his early days at Nazareth it was a tuxedo at state tournament games. In his office hangs a framed sweater he wore for a year during a run to a state title with Canyon.

This year?

"No more tuxedos. I have two black sweaters I have gone back and forth with," Lombard said. "If we get on a streak with one, I will stick with it."

Saturday he wore one of the black sweaters in recording his historic win.

Once upon a time ...

It was early in the 1978-79 season at a tournament in Kress. Barbara Lombard and her Hale Center girls team faced Nazareth, coached by her husband and former athletic shoe salesman, Joe.
"We lost, 33-32," she said.

The win was one of 36 for Lombard in his first season as a coach. He won the first of his 14 state championships that year.

Was it all cool back home that night after the game?

"Oh, yes. But one of the school members ... people have heard this story a thousand times ... put a doghouse on our lawn with a sign, 'Happy sleeping, Joe.' He came home and saw that," she said, smiling.

While she retired from coaching, her husband kept on. He celebrated his 30th season Saturday with another state championship and his 1,000th victory.

"He makes it easy on a coach's wife," she said. "He's always so business-like and patient. He's in control."

Ever get out of control at a game?

"He's gotten one technical, but that was when there was the 'seat belt rule.' Coaches couldn't get up and walk like they do now. They were at the Caprock tournament and he got up to tell a player something and the ref told him, 'Joe, I'm going to have to give you a technical.'"

I'm curious to know how many of his former players went on to have successful college basketball careers after high school. I bet there has been several.

He would have a few more state titles if it was not for Dean Weese at Levelland. Those were some of the best girls playoff games I have ever seen. Congrats to Coach Lombard he is a great coach and a classy man.

I'm going to guess by reading the original post that he is 54 since he was 24 back in 1978. :)
