IRVING – While the Dallas Cowboys still hope to work out a long-term contract with running back Marion Barber, they made sure it will be difficult for another team to sign him as a restricted free agent.
The Cowboys on Thursday placed the $2.562 million tender on Barber, which would require a team to give up first- and third-round picks for the Pro Bowler should the Cowboys not match an offer.
The Cowboys have had talks with Barber's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, in the last week about a multi-year deal.
The Cowboys placed the $2.017 million tender on defensive end Chris Canty, which would give the Cowboys a first-round pick as compensation if another team comes after the three-year veteran.
Guard Joe Berger received the $927,000 tender, while running back Tyson Thompson, who lost his kick return job last season, was not tendered, making him free to sign elsewhere.
