Pitcher and catcher not included, where do you put your best player?

I think it depends on what age the girls are, but on my daughter's 14U select team, the best players (not including pitch and catch) are definitely at middle infield (SS, 2nd) and Center field. I do have to say, our 3rd baseman is a real bulldog, though.

If you had to choose do you put them in center or ss or 2b?

In most situations ss but you must consider your pitching. example - good riseball pitcher you will need your best defensive athlete in the outfield.... good dropball pitcher emphasis goes to the infield defense.

i think one of, if not your best, fielders should be at 3rd base. you've gotta be able to handle bunts and laser shots.

Pitching dictates defense!

- If you have the speed to blow it by most batters, the ones who DO make contact will be late, and most shots will go towards 2nd.
- If you CAN'T blow it by them, and DON'T have the movement to make the batters mis-hit the ball, you better be strong at SS.
- Playing a team with lots of speed? Better be strong at 3rd to handle the bunt-and-run or slap-and-run.
- As posted above - A rise-ball pitcher will get lots of flies to the shallow outfield, while a drop-ball pitcher will get lots of ground outs.
- A good screw-ball or curve-ball pitcher will get lots of mis-hits off the handle or end of the bat, which will be slow rollers, usually towards 2nd.

So there is no ONE definitive answer. And I would be remiss in stating the obvious - You BETTER have an athlete behind the plate to block all of those pitches you called and cover the short bunts, especially if your pitcher is young, inexperienced, or both (which means wild, in other words).
