What makes a softball bat illegal?

Similar to a golf club but the ball speed off the bat is a lot more dangerous because the pitcher is right in front of the hitter.
I haven't called games in a while but the things that used to make a bat illegal were:
non conforming dimensions
Damage
modifications
design
Antec

Most umps check each team's bats before the games
And they are pretty thorough
And good bats cost over $200 these days
hard to find any under $100

Thanks! I was just curious because I saw a batter called out this past weekend for using an illegal bat.

the stealth is illegal....wow....that is the main easton bat....and it looks like most of the TPX bats are banned as well....that is odd
