I heard there was several big fires in the Snyder area today....I missed the 6 pm news but had head they evacuated the hospital and the college was in danger.

The Jaycees were working on our building and I know 1 who is a vol. firefighter from Roscoe took water and ice and headed that way earlier.

Hope all is well in Snyder and you guys please update us with what is going on!

It sounds like things are under control in Snyder....I talked to a Roscoe FF and he said they were still on scene (3 trucks) and quite a few at been evacuated for safety. The clinic, hospital, college (south part of town) But the wind had died down so they were able to get things under control.

He said he did se a few structures that were lost, but no injuries that he knew of.

I hope to hear from our DownLow friends in Snyder...hope all is well!

Scary stuff today. I've been in Snyder today and the smoke was incredible. I haven't driven around to see the aftermath, but it sure looked threatening. The fire was headed toward the college, but I hear that it only caught part of the golf course and the baseball field, but the college missed the damage. Unfortunalely the same can't be said for acerage in the area. I also heard there were several houses that caught fire. I do know that the towle park area was evacuated, but I'm pretty sure that there weren't any houses in that area that had burned. Prayers to those who were affected. There was a lot of damage done in the area.

If I was to take a guess, I would say high winds. never knew wind was a cause of fire. fire spread maybe...... if wind was able to start a fire, thats a pretty scary thought.... id never fly a kite again :(

Please don't say it was "Synder"...that would be too funny!!

Synder = Cinder

Cinder: A burned or partly burned substance, such as coal, that is not reduced to ashes but is incapable of further combustion.

Okay...maybe that wasn't funny afterall!:thinking:

When I was in high school some kids from Snyder shoe polished Sweetwater High and spelled it "Snder."

Hats off to ALL the Firefighters that stopped this one in the nick of time! I understand a few buildings were lost...but they saved a huge part of the community. The Volunteers that helped out made a huge impact on this fire...as well as many fires through out the state. This fire could have been much worse......thanks to the guys and girls that can handle the heat!

A 20' wall of fire went past my house on the west about 80' from my back door. No houses were lost in our area, we were very blessed yesterday.

When it was called in they said it was started around a pump jack...then got in some CRP grass and took off.
