Sweetwater softball team improves to 3-0

The Sweetwater High School softball team showed a variety of things in an 11-1 win over Winters, Monday at the Jerry Collins Complex.

At times the Lady Mustangs (3-0) played small ball, at other times the team used power and throughout the game, the team had strong pitching and an error-free defense.

“We’re playing solid because the girls are just excited to come out and play,” Sweetwater head coach Ginger Murray said. “We’re just having a lot of fun right now and that’s the key.”

In the first inning Sweetwater’s first two batters reached on bunts. Then Jordan Lawrence came up and hit a 2-run double to give the Lady Mustangs a 2-0 lead.

“We’re going to try to make the defense real nervous and see if we can’t force them into making errors,” Murray said. “Getting on base is the key, especially early.”

The Lady Mustangs added two more runs in the first inning on and RBI double from Brittany Garza and a sacrifice from Dedra Brown.

Brown contributed nicely for the Lady Mustangs with two stolen bases and one RBI.
In the bottom of the third the Lady Mustangs scored four more times highlighted by back-t0-back doubles by Haily McIntosh and Garza.
The Lady Mustangs again flexed their muscles in the fourth inning when sophomore Laci Jones came up with a man on first and no outs. Jones hit the ball into the right field gap and the ball rolled all the way to the wall. By the time the Winters outfielder threw the ball into the infield, Jones was rounding third for an inside the park homerun.
“That was really exciting,” Murray said. “I’ve never seen her run that fast before. She knew off the bat that she might get a home run and she just gunned it.”
The Lady Mustangs added one more run in the bottom of the fifth on a couple of Winters errors to win via the 10-run rule.
Winters’ lone run came in the top of the fourth on a single and a double. The two hits in the inning would be the only hits allowed in the game by Sweetwater pitcher Jordan Lawrence.
“Jordan is just Jordan,” Murray said. “She is just solid. She’s really starting to hit her spots right now and that’s making a huge difference.”
Lawrence faced 17 batters on Monday and struck out 10. In three games this season, Lawrence is 3-0 with 28 strikeouts.
The Lady Mustangs next travel to Wichita Falls on Thursday to play in the Sunrise Optimist tournament.
“We’re excited to play in the tournament because there is going to be a lot of good 4A and 5A schools there,” Murray said.
It is important for the team to play a tough non-district schedule, Murray said.
“That is really key that we play really good competition to have us ready for a tough Clyde and a tough Wylie,” Murray said. “Breckenridge and Comanche are better this year. Anybody can be good in district this year. We need to be ready.”

Cool! What classification is Winters? At least it appears you'll be playing some 4 & 5a schools this weekend. If this weather doesn't clear up we won't get any games played today :(

1a or 2a??

I love how the majority of our district teams will "pad" their records with these 1a & 2a wins and then come in with their chests puffed out thinking they are gonna give us some competition and then we just gotta bring 'em back to reality!  :D

so your record will be 35-0 with only 4 runs allowed all season for 3 pitchers?

that would be impressive:cool:

Poor Cat. All through high school and college she was cursed with lack of run support. If she had gone to UCLA or Arizona she would probably have been on two or three national championship teams. A great pitcher can keep you close in a game but it takes hits and scoring to win games also.
Three things needed to win softball and baseball games.
1. Pitching
2. Good defense play. (Fielding and catching important here)
3. Hitting and scoring.

Without one of them it is like a three legged stool without one of the legs.

I don't think the UIL would let Rockdale's football team play our
girl's softball team in either sport.

Well I think the entire time I was in high school the softball team won about 3 games so this is a huge improvement.
