Coast Guard searching for missing kayaker in Port Aransas waters

PORT ARANSAS – The Coast Guard searched unsuccessfully on Sunday for a kayaker who went missing in the waters of Port Aransas.
Stephen Stafford, 20, of Austin was kayaking with a friend near the North Port Aransas jetties when a wave or swell caused both their kayaks to flip. The friend resurfaced and motioned to bystanders, who called for help.
The Coast Guard received the report of Stafford’s disappearance at 5:55 a.m. Sunday and sent two rescue boats from the Port Aransas station and a HH-65C helicopter from the air station in Corpus Christi.
The search was suspended at nightfall and will resume at daybreak today. Stafford’s family drove down from Austin to meet with Coast Guard command about the search. Neither kayaker was wearing a life jacket, but the Coast Guard has hope they will find Stafford, said Lt. Ben Sparacin. Texas Parks and Wildlife is assisting with the search.
