I just finished this today and all I have to say is WOW! I knew about the streak but I had no idea how amazing the defense was.

Over the past 35 seasons Cuero has won 338 games which places them #5 statewide among all classifications:

Most Wins 1973-2007

1 - Celina (355 wins)
2 - Southlake Carroll (352 wins)
3 - Refugio (350 wins)
4 - Converse Judson (344 wins)
5 - Cuero (338 wins)

During that span they won 12 Region Championships, made 9 appearances in the State Finals (they have a 10th appearance back in 1970) and won 3 State Titles.

From 1973-1975 they won 44 consecutive games which still ranks today as the longest winning streak in U.I.L. history in the 3A Classification. (It's also the longest winning streak in U.I.L. history in the 2nd largest classification).

During that streak they had an amazing 26 shutouts over the 44 game span: 9 in 1973, 9 in 1974 and 8 in 1975.

In 1973 district play they demolished Converse Judson by a score of 67-6. Since that game 35 years ago, no other team has scored as many points against Judson or beaten them by that big of a margin. Overall it ranks as the 2nd worst loss in the history of the program.

Looking at those scores bring back memories. some good, some bad, some fun, some sad. Those were the great years for Cuero. Sent about 7 guys to the pros from off those teams.

great work WOS It would ! Wouldn't it !:D

I'm thinking about the 75' final between Cuero and Ennis. They scored on the opening kickoff ran the ball all the way back. Then in the 4th qtr. QW Sr.brings in the play when we're on the 4 yd. line. It's QW's number. He gets excited and starts stuttering and can't get the play out his mouth. So the play clock expires and we get a delay of game penalty. Lose the game. :D

we still joke about that.;) :D

How about a last minute 2-point conversion via a fullback dive right down the Gobbler defense's gullet. ;)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the 1973 Qtr final game against Gregory-Portland played in front of 20,000 in Corpus? I believe Cuero was ranked #1, and G-P was ranked #2.

Boy, I bet that was a heck of game. I was only ten at the time and had way to get to the game. However, I remember making up signs to put on the buses!!

Something I just realized looking over this again....

Cuero is 5-2 in head-to-head games against the only 4 programs that have won more games over the same period of time.

I knew we played there - just didn't know when.... - is that the year we went to the playoffs as a result of the 3 way tie and won the coin toss? We ended up playing Brownwood in the State Finals and losing but that was the beginning of many great seasons to come :)

Charlie Braun was a great football coach and established a winning tradition durning his tenure at Liberty Hill. He laid the foundation on which Coach Vance has built a football power. The Panther faithful owe Coach Braun a debt of gratitude.

Wow! Really something that Cuero was into it way back then.

I also didn't know that Cuero was 4A in 1980 and 81.

Interesting.

I finally found a reference to Cuero's first game ever played... It looks like I need to switch the order of Yoakum and Beeville in the 1911 schedule... I knew the Beeville game was played in December so I automatically assumed the Yoakum game had to be played earlier. It looks like that may not be the case.

Check out the very bottom right corner of the image below....

1911

http://idisk.mac.com/cboehme69-Public/stats/3a/cuero1911.gif

I know it's difficult to read so here's the exact text of it:

Beeville to Play Cuero

CUERO, Tex. Dec. 10 - The Beeville
football team will come to Cuero next
Saturday to engage the High School boys
in a contest. This will be the first game
the local boys ever have participated
in and they are working hard to get in
winning shape. The High School cam-
pus will be the scene of the conflict.

...and here's the entire page in PDF for those who prefer that format:
