Palestine’s search for a new head football coach and athletic director will be coming to an end soon.
The Palestine Independent School District Board of Trustees will be making a decision at Monday’s regularly scheduled board meeting on who will be in charge of the Palestine athletic program.
“I am going to inform the board that we interviewed applicants and give them my recommendation,” Palestine ISD Superintendent Jerry Mayo said. “We are looking for someone who will be best suited to meet the needs of our athletic program and someone who can work for our kids and community.”
Mayo said four candidates have been interviewed for the job, including Booker Bowie, who currently is serving as Palestine’s interim head football coach and athletic director.
Bowie spent five years as the Palestine defensive coordinator before stepping down last season but still remained at Palestine as an administrator.
Other candidates who were interviewed for the position included Paul Essary of Deer Park; Tom Hensley of Copperas Cove and Terry Gambill of Allen.
The naming of a new head coach and athletic director will bring an end to some saga at Palestine after Glen Tunstall was reassigned from the position in November. After the Palestine board of trustees denied Tunstall’s grievance, he has been reassigned in the district as the director of elementary P.E.
“It will be nice to move forth and getting someone named and putting everything to a close,” Mayo said. “The kids are anxious to have someone in there.”
