I'll honestly be surprised if this league ever gets off the ground.

It reminds me a lot of the "World Hockey Association" that was created during the NHL lockout in which players like Eric Lindros got drafted by Dallas.

Last I heard he was on the practice squad for the Bears. I wonder if he is still with them? I wouldn't think you could play in this league and be on an NFL practice squad as well, but what do I know?

Difference is the NFL is all for this league and they want it to develop into a "minor" league system...Would not be shocked if NFL puts some money in it down the road

NFL officals are already going to ref the games/

Well, the money had better come sooner rather than later...the league will be lucky if it has the funds to last an entire season on their own.

Keep in mind the people that are running this have very deep pockets. They've already sign sponsorship deals as well.

Baseball does well with a minor league system.....although this is not directly a farm system for the NFL why couldn't it succeed.

no, but the XFL had some pretty deep pockets too, and we saw how that turned out...just look at the list of "other" football leagues that have tried and ultimately failed:

American Football league (3 leagues called this other than the one eventually absorbed into the NFL)
All-American Football Conference
World Football League
United States Football League
Canadian Football league (had American teams in the 90s)
XFL
NFL Europe

NFL Europe was the attempted "minor league" system for the NFL, and probably would have made it had it been located in the States. If this new league wants to become that, they're going to have to adjust its thinking.

Every league that starts has its own idea on how it's going to be successful and what will separate it from the rest. The latest incarnation wants to take players from colleges and put them on teams based on those regions. That's one of your first problems. We don't need to recreate the 2000 Florida Gators or the 1998 Michigan Wolverines. If the NFL is going to get involved, they'll have to set up some sort of team-allotment system in which NFL franchises are allowed to send their players from whatever college they attended into this league. And no NFL team is going to have guys all from the same state or region that they're wanting to evaluate.

Secondly, the restriction on having to have a college degree is going to prevent some pretty good talent from getting sent. There are plenty of juniors every year who go undrafted but end up latching on to an NFL practice squad somewhere.

If Eric Crouch and Chris Leak are faces that this league wants to build its marketing around, they're going to have major issues.

That's exactly what I'm talking about...the idea sounds great in your head, but when you go to execute it, it's less than palatable to look at.

I'd rather watch Arena football (which I do already, and I like it alot!) Just like every other league that has come along, they will fall flat on their faces. Their is only one pro football league, the NFL, and that's all that will ever be. I have also read in this league that players must have a college degree, no coming out early.

And people don't want to watch "minor league" football. They want to watch the real deal. I don't think these teams will be able to generate any revenues, ticket sales will be poor, merchandise sales will be poor, and watching a bunch of players who could not make it in the NFL doesn't sound very exciting to me.

I thought that's basically what NFL Europe was, a "farm system" of sorts for the NFL. Where is that league at now?

That was in Europe with players no one has ever heard of.

If it was in America, and had players who were draft picks and future prospects then it would have interest.

People watch the AFL, that's people who couldn't make it in the big boy league.

Players noone has ever heard of. Hmm! What about these guys.

The league began in 1991 as the World League of American Football, with 10 teams from the United States and Europe, spreading from Scotland to Spain. After closing for two seasons in 1993 and 1994, the league returned with six European teams and retained the same format until the end.

The league was used by NFL teams to test young talent and produced players such as quarterback Kurt Warner, who led the St. Louis Rams to the 2000 Super Bowl championship and won two NFL Most Valuable Player awards; Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme; and star Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri.

Oh, and another thing.

The NFL folded its development league in Europe after 16 years on Friday, calling the decision a sound business move that will allow for a stronger international focus on regular-season games outside the United States.

Once again, a "farm league" for the NFL. And Arena football has been around a long time, and has been way more successful than NFL Europe, The XFL, or this AAFL league can ever dream about being. These guys don't make lots of money, and still get out there and play their butts off week in and week out.

A "farm league" that was in Europe with no TV contract in America. If they played in the U.S. and had games on ESPN or some other channel it would do better. Football is the most popular sport in America, it's not in Europe believe it or not

Wow, 2 players, I guess that means it was bustling with super stars... O wait, it wasn't. A lot of the teams were made up of European, Mexican and Japanese players. Along with the crappiest of American players who could actually be told to go play in NFL Europe.

You would get more players wanting to play in a minor league if they stayed here. They would get way more exposure if they do good here rather in a country where no one cares.

trojan37

There was a lot more than 2 players who came from that league. John Kitna was another. And I used to watch it on t.v. Yes it was shown in the U.S. The crappiest of NFL players, one who won a superbowl, and one of the best kickers in the NFL.

Although the last version of the NFL's developmental league had no U.S. teams, American television coverage continued until the end. From 1995 to 1998, the primary TV carrier was FX, which carried two games a week, one on Saturday and the other on Sunday. From 1999 to 2004, Fox Sports Net showed a "game of the week" on Saturday, with DirecTV viewers receiving additional live games on channels that normally carried NFL Sunday Ticket. In 2005, NFL Network began showing all regular season games, either live or on tape delay, and this continued until the league folded.

From 1995 to 2005, Fox showed the World Bowl and two or three regular season games annually. In 2006 and 2007, NFL Network showed the title game.

Announcers who called NFL Europa games over the years included Curt Menefee, Nick Halling, Ari Wolfe, Troy Aikman, Daryl 'Moose' Johnston, Michael Reghi, and Brentson Buckner.

Game broadcasts were also available throughout Europe and in other territories throughout the world.
