looks like 4A will send 4 teams to the playoffs like 5A does...

The UIL Has released the approval of four teams in the Class 4A playoffs starting next year for all sports. The referendum vote was passed by a large percentage of the Class 4A superintendents. This will make an enormous difference for the smaller schools that have had to face large schools on the small school side of the bracket. Now the two biggest schools qualifying for the playoffs in a district will go to the big school bracket.

If that is the case, then I would expect most 4A districts to be 8 team districts which would mean the total number of 4A schools would increase to around 250, just like 5A. That means the cutoff for 3A will probably be coming down and the 4A schools that thought they would drop will remain 4A and the borderline 3As will for sure be going up. I think you could expect a cutoff between 850-880 for 3A. That also would drop to the lower limit down to 400 or so and bring back some 3As that dropped last time.

So...
5A: Around 250 schools
4A: Around 250 schools
3A: 180-195 schools
2A: 185-200 schools
1A: 140-150 schools

There are going to be some God awful teams making the 4A
playoffs from West Texas. It was bad enough already but now.

Makes sense Panther One, but if they do this, instead of fixing the problem in reg 1 and West Tx. because of a shortage of 3A schools. They are going to make it worse. Whether they drop the number or even leave it where it is, they will probably at least three of the schools they presently have, which is 35(15-18 less than Regions 2 & 3). Somethings got to give. I can't see them achieving their goal of having six team districts in 3A (especially reg 1) and creating a larger # of 4A schools under their present philosophy. Unless:hand: they have built more than 20+ schools in the Metro areas which would allow them to possibly move the number up to about 990 and create more teams in both 3A and 4A. Rumore seem to be fly everywhere. At least the 4A playoff formula is a fact, so it does shed a little light, but the UIL is very unpredictable. Every time they post their new realignment numbers there are always some interesting discussions regarding the effects of the cutoff #'s , but this Feb. 1st may be the most interesting one of all. We have 21 days and 29 minutes left before we know.

The time is coming when the regular season will be abolished and all teams will be in the playoffs, which will begin in August.

I figure that any vote to expand the playoffs to include more than 4 teams per district would fail. Now that more than 50% of the teams in the state are guaranteed to qualify for the playoffs (520 qualifiers out of 1020 total schools), I would think that those school districts that qualify would now vote against any further increase as it would decrease their chances of ever winning an actual title, and since that number is now a majority, no vote will pass.

Total number of UIL 11-man Playoff qualifiers per year

2008 around 520 (5A: 128, 4A: 128, 3A: 96, 2A: 96, 1A: 72) - the number would change if there are any BYE districts added in like 2-3A currently.
