AUSTIN, Texas -- Former University of Texas baseball player and assistant coach Deron Gustafson passed away on Thursday morning.

Gustafson played for the Horns from 1981-83 and was a member of the Texas '83 national championship team. He served as back-up second baseman for the national champs, hitting .306 in 18 games.

Gustafson, son of former Longhorn head coach Cliff Gustafson, served as an assistant coach at UT for 13 seasons from 1984-96.

Arrangements for funeral services are pending.

wow thats horrible, they are a great family. i have eaten at their house on many occasions. Prayers go out to them.

sad news. what was the cause of death? he was a young man.

I read in the Houston Chronicle this morning he died of liver disease. He went into the hospital on Dec. 23rd, liver was functioning at 15%. Was trying to get a transplant. I loved his dad and the style in which he coached. Prayers to the family.
