SAN ANTONIO – San Diego Chargers tight ends coach Clancy Barone has agreed to become Texas A&M's offensive coordinator under new coach Mike Sherman, according to a source close to the negotiations.

Barone was a graduate assistant at A&M in 1993 and worked closely with offensive linemen under Sherman, who was the Aggies' offensive line coach at the time. Barone will likely coach the offensive line at A&M, according to the source.

Even though Barone holds the offensive coordinator title, Sherman might call his own plays. That detail hasn't been explained publicly by Sherman.

Barone was the both offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Wyoming (1997-99) and Houston (2000-02). He was the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Texas State in 2003. According the Chargers' Web site, 27 of Barone's linemen signed NFL contracts while he was a college coach.

In 2004, Barone made the jump to the NFL. He spent three seasons with the Atlanta Falcons before joining the Chargers this year.

Monday, The News reported Arkansas interim coach Reggie Herring would be A&M's new defensive coordinator under Sherman. Herring denied the report initially and called it a "non-truth." However, he then said, "I'm talking to A&M and several other schools."
