The teams agreed before the game to be co-champions in the event of a tie. They did not have the same overtime rules back then.

Yes, Celina really has 7 1/2 championships just like Liberty Hill really only has 1 (1/2 + 1/2 since there isn't an outright championship! ;))!

Prior to the implementation of overtime if a championship ended in a tie there were co-champions. In 1995 Sealy beat Commerce 21-20. Commerce went for 2 and an outright championship rather than kicking and getting a co-championship. Celina has 8 championships.

the next year, in 1998,

3A broke into two divisions, with Aledo and Newton winning the first D-1 and D-2 titles, respectively

5A split in 1990

thinking it was such a great idea, the UIL kept doing it:

4A split in 1996

3A and 2A split in 1998

1A and Six-Man split in 2006

i'm not as well versed in 3A as i was in 2A, but i'm trying

After four years i think i'm used to it (and Celina looks pretty well acclimated as well)

Well in the for what it's worth category,
I told anyone that would listen that they just were smokin dope. I knew you would win and I called the gilmer game pretty close. I said 35 14. I did not figure you guys would have to kick for three. And I also said that we would have given you the best game of the year if possible to play. We just play well against true running teams. Harder to play the spread because the whole point is to make one on one the game instead of the team. AT least at the 3a level you will not see many quarterbacks at the level of Eskew so you can still make a great team effort and win.

they didn't have to agree to be co-champs - thats the way it was ... if the title game ended in a tie the teams were co-champions

until the UIL started overtime ...
