He wasn't out of bounds yet IMO. Thus, should have been a touchback. Like the announcers said, I hate how everybody wants to reach the ball out now over the goal line every chance they get. Run thru the goal line & secure the ball. There are times for it, but not every time. Good chance of fumbling & losing possession.

A&M beat Fresno State b/c their player fumbled in OT doing that. If he doesn't, Fresno State wins.

Utah's qb Brian Johnson is from Baytown Lee fyi. Good player.

I picked Utah but found myself pulling for Navy. Oh well, I'm still tied for the lead in my bowl pick contest. 1-0 with many others.

Referring to southern part of Alaska on the water. Sorry I don't have a map in front of me. He likes it so far, see how that winter treats him.

Its really not that bad, if he is an outdoors person come May he will fall in love with it. Many of the residents are ex military that returned after they got out of the military.

I'm going back up in about a month, and so far there is no snow on the Peninsula.

They haven't had any since before Thanksgiving

Yes, he is an outdoorsman. He went up in the mountains on 4-wheelers the other day checking it all out, wildlife, etc. He hopes to hunt there once he gets settled in. He just got his stuff & all sent to him. He's been in the AF for close to 17 years. He can retire when he's 40 or 41 I think (he's 37 now). He has seen the world & done well.

What does going "back up" mean? North to the Peninsula?

What a great game...I hope a majority of the bowls are this good.

It is one thing when guys on the field can't see something and rule wrong. But when you see it and still rule wrong due to lack of rules knowledge, that is quite another. And then it gets compounded by guys in the booth not even knowing the rule.

The play should have been ruled a touchback. The runner is not out of bounds when he is airborne, even if he is over the out of bounds area.

For all the bashing I do of announcers, I must concede, Holtz and May had this right, even if the officials did not.

Did you know the great John Wayne movie North to Alaska takes place in Alaska? It is shown regularly on tv and is a very good funny movie.

I am in Oklahoma at the present so BACK UP means Back up to Alaska:)

The Kenai Peninsula is where I live. The Salmon capital of the world:)

The worlds larges Chinook Salmon came from the Kenai River 96 lbs. There are a bunch in the 60-80 lb range.

I was thinking it should of been a touchback, but isn't there a rule about the offensive team not being able to advance the ball on a forward fumble? I remember Oakland's Dave Casper being stopped short of the goal, so he intentionally fumbled forward and another Raider recovered for a TD. This was either a 4th and goal or the last play of the game. I know the NFL put in a rule to keep this from happening again.

What if the player fumbles at the 5 and the ball goes out at the 1, is the ball placed on the 1 or back at the 5?

VAMike
12-21-2007, 06:25 PM
On 4th down and on extra points, if the offense fumbles , only the fumbler can get the ball and advance. If a different offensive player gets it , the ball becomes dead and is taken back to the spot of the fumble. If that different player gets it behind the spot of the fumble, ball is dead there.

On any down, if a ball is fumbled and goes forward and out of bounds, it comes back to the spot of the fumble. If it goes backwatds and out of bounds, it is dead there.

In your example the ball comes back to the 5.

In last night's game, the ball was fumbled forward, hit the pylon and went out of bounds. Since the ball entered the endzone, is this what would make the correct call a touchback?

VAMike

Whenever anything hits the pylon itis considered as being in the endzone and out of bounds. Since it was a fumbled ball thathit it in this play, you are right, it should have been a touchback.

Thanks for the ruling, I did read where the refs admitted they missed the call and it should of been a touchback and the ball given to Navy.
