Northwestern has actually lost the last 2 years, both to Grand Valley by combined 7 points and now today to Valdosta.

That was an officiating error. The player dove into the end zone, drawing a flag, correctly, for unsportsmanlike conduct. In that situation, the score does not count. This is different than on a normal play when there is an unsportsmanlike act by the scoring team on their way to a TD. In that situation, the 6 points stand. The crew should have not allowed the 2 points and then penalized yardage (as they did ) on the KO

They had another in the 1st quarter on a punt that was ruled a touchback even though the returner wanted to run. This is what happens when guys work HS rules (in states other than Tx and Mass) and college rules. They get the 2 mixed up

So the try for point is different than a normal play from scrimmage when this occurs? Please explain...
And, also talk about the difference in HS & college rules regarding the returner wanting to advance the ball (not automatic touchback) & how it varies state to state please...

VA Mike just finished answering that for me and here was his reply.
"8-3-4-b and 3-1-3-g Example 4
Rule changed within past few years to make extra points enforcement like enforcement in overtime"

HS rules in 48 states say the kick is dead as soon as it crosses the plane of the goal line. NCAA (and HS in TX and Mass) do not make the kick dead that easily. It has to touch the ground in the EZ or be caught or recovered by a player who then takes a knee in order to become dead normally.
As for the penalty enforcement, if there is a regular play, i.e offense is trying to score a TD and passes the ball. Ball is intercepted and runback by the defender. The defender ends up scoring but commits an unsportsmanlike act onhis way, i.e. taunting, high stepping, diving , etc. The score counts and the penalty can be enforced on the extra point or the KO But if this same thing happens in extra periods, the score does not count and the penalty is enforced on the next play (which means the defenderd team will now be starting from their 40 not the 25. ) The rule for this enforcement on extra points is the same as the ruile for enforcements like this in extra periods. NO SCORE

Thanks, good stuff. I was right in that I knew the Texas HS rule for touchbacks, etc. But I learned something on the unsportsmanlike penalty regarding overtimes & try for point in OT.
Much appreciated.

The punt was correct. The ball hit the ground in the field of play making the goal line a plane.

What are you talking about??? The goal line is a plane regardless of whether a punt hitsthe ground in the field of play or not. But whether or not it is a plane has no bearing on whether or not it becomes dead when it crosses through it. I think you might be confused about what happened on the play. It was the RECEIVING team player who touched it in the air when it was over the end zone, not the KICKING team player. Ball should have remained live.
