This was before the main polls took over and were done by several of them. SMU was voted MNC by a couple of them but Minnesota had the majority (most were partial to the Big Ten and Notre Dame). Some modern day sources list them as co-champions. Minnesota didnt' play in a bowl and had an 8-0-0 record but only two of their teams they played won more than 4 games and those two won 6 so SMU had the competition edge that year. Remember MNCs were decided before the bowl games at that time.

SMU had a great season that year with tough competition. They had a great defensive team and some great backs that included Bob Finley.

The history follows. All games were in Dallas unless otherwise noted.

Sept. 21 Beat North Texas 39 - 0

Sept. 28 Beat Austin 60 - 0

Oct. 5 Beat Tulsa 14 - 0

Oct. 12 Beat Washington (Missiouri) 35 - 0 in Missouri

Oct. 19 Beat Rice (8-3) 10-0 (Rice had some great teams back then.)

Oct. 26 Beat Hardin-Simmons at Wichita Falls, TX 18 - 6 (Hardin-Simmons was a smaller school but had some good teams.)

Nov. 2 Beat Texas 20 - 0 :(

Nov. 9 Beat UCLA (8-2) at UCLA 21 - 0

Nov. 16 Beat Arkansas at Arkansas 17 - 6

Nov. 23 Beat Baylor (8-3) 10 - 0

Nov. 30 Beat TCU (12-1) at TCU 20 - 14. This game was broadcast on the radio nation wide and received lots of attention. They didn't have tv then. TCU had the great QB Sammy Baugh on their team and it was a classic.

Dec. 7 Beat Texas A&M 24 - 0

January 1, 1936 The Rose Bowl SMU lost a close one to Stanford (8-1) by the score of 0 - 7. This was to be the last time a team from Texas played in the Rose Bowl until 2005.

A great year for SMU and what a defense. A 12-1 season including the Rose Bowl game. Nine shut outs and only one team (TCU) scored more than one td on them getting 14 points.
Fantastic indeed. If Fran comes to Dallas to coach SMU maybe more of the same.

I wasn't born until 1984, so I don't really remember. ;)

Unfotunately no Ad. I wasn't a big football fan until 1956 and I was fighting the bull at the Salon de la Plaza in Juarez, Mexico.

Phil C: I know Doak Walker came a little later, but fyi. I was seconds away from being named "DOAK" until my Mom stepped in & said no. Doak Walker was my Dad's childhood sports hero.

I sure respect the man & what he accomplished, but glad to not carry his first name!
