From DMN:

DISD: Teach sportsmanship, not just Xs and Os

DISD, you have a problem

In the past 15 months or so, there have been multiple incidents of poor sportsmanship involving DISD students.

Last year, there were reports of a fight when Skyline and Mesquite Horn were exchanging handshakes after a game.

Then Richardson Berkner players and fans were shocked when Carter players refused to shake hands after the end of their playoff game.

This year, a game between Kimball and A. Maceo Smith was called off with more than seven minutes remaining because of a fight between players.

Now comes this latest allegation of Roosevelt players attacking the Gilmer sideline after their playoff game last week. Everything hasn’t been sorted out yet – there are always two sides to these types of stories - but the video evidence seems to support what Gilmer officials are saying.

Not all DISD teams and coaches behave in this manner. In fact, the vast majority are well-behaved. But the problems keep popping up with enough frequency that the DISD would be well advised to institute a comprehensive sportsmanship program. Make it mandatory instruction for all athletes at the start of every school year, then follow up with speakers and programs throughout the year. It will cost a little money, but it will be worth it to avoid further P.R. damage to a school district that already does much more good than it ever gets credit for.

Yes, other school districts have similar sportsmanship problems from time to time. Yes, it seems everyone, especially the media, is always picking on the DISD. But the same pedestal that makes the DISD a target for naysayers can also make Dallas the premier example of a school district that doesn't tolerate bad sportsmanship and athlete misconduct.

The DISD reacted swiftly and thoroughly after the death of Carter football player Eric Brown from heat stroke in 2004. Now, the DISD has what appears to be a first-class monitoring and prevention program. It's a model for other school districts. The same decisive measures should be taken to ensure sportsmanship among DISD athletes and coaches.

Time to time...lol...That's why several coaches in DISD flat out refuse to even talk to the media. They just wrote an idiotic article attacking SOC and their TV news outlet, Channel 8, went right after Mays for a situation that had longsince been investigated and no wrongdoing found.

Good job DMN widening the chasm between the media and the local high school teams and coaches.
