UMHB has hit upon a real winning strategy for their recently developed football program. Offer top Texan athletes not recruited by the larger schools a chance to continue their athletic careers and get a decent education in the process. With Texas rich in talent many young men get overlooked in the D1 and D2 scholarship lottery but are excellent athletes. For example a kid who is a 6' 1" 280 lbs OL and is good can't make it in the bigger schools anymore, they want 6'5" 320lbs or more. These guys make great DIII players.

When I was in college [back in the days of a double bar face mask LOL.] the starting OLs at Cal and UCLA were about that size(6'1" 250-270) or smaller. Remember Anthony Munoz? He played for my old high school and was about 6'6" 270 lbs which was HUGE in 1970's. He was HUGE at USC and made Hall of Fame in the NFL.

UMHB has attracted the best athletes in this class in Texas, has a great head Coach in Freedenberg and will win a National Title this year or in the near future.

Trinity University in SA went to the DIII final in 2002 and lost to Mount Union. Their All American qb Roy Hampton got suspended the week before for trying to break up a brawl in a watering hole on the River Walk and didn't play. That was the high water mark for the Tigers as they haven't been able to recruit like UMHB which started their program a few years before then and has steadily grown as a powerhouse in DIII. High grades and SAT scores factor in admission to Trinity and that is a handicap in recruitng as well. Since both schools are in Texas Trinity meets UMHB in round regularly and gets eliminated. Bottom line UMHB owns Trinity now and that will not change for some time if ever.

Congratulations to UMHB and keep representing Texas in NCAA DIII!
