What is your personal favorite playoff game ever. Mine was Aledo vs. Seminole in about 97. It was played at Wylie, and we went because Aledo had put us out the week before. Aledo had a great well rounded team and eventually won state. Seminole had 1 player basically, (Toby Shain) probly spelled it wrong. He single handedly kept Seminole in the game. Aledo knew he would carry the ball every time and they could not keep him out of the endzone. He was big 220 or so. He kept them in it till the buzzer.

Favorite pro playoff game-- Super Bowl III--- Broadway Joe talking smack (guaranteed victory) and then backing it up, with the Jets being an 18 point underdog against Colts.

Best two I can remember happened in the same year-- WO-S vs. CC Calallen in the 4A State Semis and Refugio vs. Mart in the 2A State Semis back in 2000. There were also a few of those Calallen/LaMarque battles in the Semis throughout the 90's (if I remember right, six straight) that were barnburners, but it's all a blur to me now.

I always enjoyed Sinton vs Bridge City in 2000 at Kyle Field. It was my first time there and the Pirates kicked some butt.

Two playoff games from the '04 state championship run for Wylie. Quarterfinals versus #2 ranked Decatur final 14-13. They had beaten us 44-7 during the regular season and we came out mad. I've never seen such an intense game all the way through at the high school level.

Second was the state championship game vs. #1 ranked Cuero @ Baylor. The game was tied with 2:00 left. We held Decatur for 4 downs when they had the ball inside our 20 yard line. For some reason they went for it instead of kicking the field goal. Then the legend, Case Keenum drove Wylie all the way down the field in 1:30. We kicked a game winning field goal as time expired to win state! There were 16-17,000 people there, about 10,000 on Wylie's side. One of the loudest and most surreal moments I've ever witnessed in high school football. I still get chills thinking about it!! We won 17-14....:D :D

a good one from this year - copperas cove vs waxahachie - cove was down by 14 with 7 minutes to go and scored 23 points in those final minutes to win by 2 (they forced a safety)...

I was going to say the 04 Decatur playoff game too, but since I started the thread, I didn't want to sound too much like a homer.

Don't think so, talked to some people at the school who would know afterward. Obviously people from places other than Abilene and Cuero came because it was a state championship game....

I think that was the same day that Greenwood played Daingerfield. The game was good, but the huge melee that broke out 34 seconds before the game was over was the most exciting part??:D :p

ok lets see

Games I saw
1986 Jefferson vs Daingerfield: This was an all out battle..Some were saying the 86 Tigers were almost as good as the 83 team..Jefferson won 14-7 on way to State Title

1988 Marshall vs Dallas Carter: Possibly best game I ever saw..Two teams went at it back and forth until Carter scores with 22 seconds left and won 22-18

Games I Broadcasted
2004: Gilmer vs Tatum: The game itself while great was nothing compared to the build-up..East Texas had been a buzz about this match up since October

2004 Jasper vs Gilmer: 49-47..Enough Said

2006: Slc vs Trinity: the game and the hype actually were the same..To see the crowd, and to see SLC pay respect to Trinity by watching the Haka after the game then cheering was AMAZING..After they performed the entire stadium stood up..Gives a person chill bumps

1991: Sinton vs. Hitchcock 19-19, Sinton advanced on pentratations. I will never forget the Hitchcock RB looking back wondering why no one was chasing him and his coaches frantically trying to get him to stop from scoring. Ensuing kick off was HUGE!! 40+ return to set up our scoring drive. It was the craziest game I've been too!!

2001: Sinton vs. Bellville 21-13, Hell of a game at a standing room only Victorial Memorial Stadium.

2004: Cuero vs. Wimberley 21-17 - the Fog Bowl

2005: Wimberley vs. Gainesville 21-7

2006: Calallen vs. Buda 20-21
.........Liberty Hill vs. Celina 22-19

I think it was 1999. Weatherford beat Brownwood 49-42 at Shotwell in the 2nd or 3rd round of the playoffs. Game was back and forth all day. Brownwood came up just short of the goal line on the last play of the game that would have tied it. Awesome ball game.

I don't know anything about any of those other games but I know that The Rattlers' game against Jasper was amazing (42-40 Rattlers). The game against Giddings this year was pretty exciting as well (21-14 Giddings). Another one of my favorites was the 04-05 season. The Rattlers beat Bellville 37-34. They scored on a screen from about 20 yards out on 4th and fifteen with about 20 seconds left. It was awesome.

2006 Celina-Madison

This was the game when we were going to get shown that the 10-1 could not be ran successfully in 3A, where we were going to get shown real speed, where Shawnberry McNeil was going to run all over us.

Result -

Shawnberry McNeil - 11 carries for 22 yards

Celina 43, Madison 6

2nd Favorite-

2000 2A State Championship against Quan Cosby and Mart

Mart had been ranked above Celina for two years - Mart had won DI in '99 and Celina had won DII. Celina had 40+ game winning streak, Mart had 30+ game winning streak,

Result - Celina 21, Mart 17

a few that come to mind...

Celina vs Garrison....2001 State Championship. Probably the most exciting game I've been to and oddly enough, one of my good friends was playing LB for Celina but I didn't meet him until the next year.

Wylie vs Cuero...2004 State Championship. The game wasn't that great other than the finish...but obviously it holds a special place for personal reasons.

Wylie vs Everman...2000 State Semifinals. Everman was by far the superior team in terms of talent and it showed as they won state in 01 and 02. Wylie was the better team on that night though and was able to come up with play after play on defense to shut down the Everman offense.

SLC vs Trinity....2006 Area Round...if you were there then you understand. If you weren't there...then you've heard about it. This game lived up to the hype just like Texas vs USC.

Wylie vs Decatur....2006 Bi-District. There's just something about driving for a TD...missing the 2-pt conversion...recovering the onside kick (I don't think Wylie has attempted one in a LOOOONG time)...and hitting a 40+ yd (42 I think) FG with 1 second left on the clock that made this come from behind win special.

Wylie vs Decatur...2004 Regional Finals. As others have said...Decatur had whipped Wylie earlier in the season and had blown out everybody else. Wylie goes up 14-6 in the first half...stops Decatur 4 times in the 2nd half in the redzone...gets a lucky fumble at the goalline...and pulls the biggest upset of 2004.

Abilene High vs SLC...2004 Regional Semis. Abilene has the lead for most of the game before SLC scores late in the 4th to take the lead. AHS comes back down the field only to throw an INT just short of the endzone to lose a game. Nobody thought SLC was beatable that year but AHS almost pulled the upset.

Abilene Cooper vs Odessa Permian...1992 Regular Season. Two of the top 5 teams in the state meet @ Ratliff. Cooper hasn't beaten Permian since October of 82...1782 that is. Cooper goes up 21-0 in the 1st quarter and the MOJO crowd is silent...literally. Finally in the 3rd quarter...MOJO starts their comeback and by the middle of the 4th they are up 31-21. Cooper is forced to kick a long FG with under a minute to go. 31-24. The turf at Ratliff gives the Cougars another opportunity as the onside kick goes over the heads of the Panthers and Cooper recovers. 3 plays later and they're in the endzone...trailing 31-30 with the XP pending. Randy Allen doesn't get the right info to find out that they're tied in penetrations but ahead in 1st downs...and he elects to go for a 2-pt conversion. With OU-signee Mike Rose in the backfield...the ball goes to Rose on a sweep to the left side...right before he makes the corner...he pulls up to throw the ball to a wide open man in the endzone. However, he's tackled by multiple defenders before he can ever get a pass off. Permian 31 Cooper 30. It would be another 4 years (1996) before Cooper finally beats Permian.

1. i believe it was 03 and sweetwater played decatur in stephenville. decatur threw it deep on the last play of the game and the guy caught but was stopped on the 6 inch line.

2. it was in 06 when sweetwater played Iowa Park. we were down 21 with little time remaining. i want to say that there was 6 minutes left. mustangs came back and won in OT.

I am sure there are a lot of great games but I do believe DAve CAmpbell even says the best 3A game ever was Vernon Southlake in 1992. I was at that game and still have never seen a game even close to that good. Dane Johnson scores on teh first play, Dexter Butler shows why he is one of the best ever RB in 3A history, Southlake doesnt have a close game in the playoffs excpet for that one. It was the state title game that year.

OK, TC I would have to agree as far as a fantastic finish. Seeing as how the Decatur coaches were doing backflips on the field when we failed when going for 2. That made it pretty special. I nailed the TC part didn't I?;) ;)

I've got two favorites.

2002: Liberty Hill (of the "scrubs") over Poteet, 41-30. It was my oldest sons' Senior season and the first playoff win for a Panther team in 18 years. Because of that season, the team won the "Gordon Wood Award".

2006: State Championship game with Celina. Middle sons' time to shine. :)

The youngest son has no pressure to become part of the Texas High School Hall of Fame Museum. ;)

In 1985 Vernon went up against Kermit who was #1 in all 3a and Vernon got the ball on the 1 yard line with 2:00 left and the score tied 14-14. Vernon QB Dan Buesing drove us 99 yards and finished with a 21yard td pass to Ron Cook to knock off #1 Kermit 21-14 in Snyder's stadium. Vernon ended up losing in the semifinals to Dangerfield 20-12.

The difference in that game was the one big pass Wylie gave up for a touchdown. They'd been setting it up all game with a short curl route. Our corner thought he had an INT, but they faked the short pass and the receiver went long. Everyone in the stands saw it coming and you could hear us all try to yell at him not to bite. But hey, it was a great play call by Gatesville. :( :( :(

Henderson did nothing that game. He had 28 at the half and finished with 101. He was averaging 186/game coming into that game. Granted if he had gone for 200 yds then we wouldn't have been in the game. However, IMO 4 plays made the difference.

1) The stop and go route that Gatesville completed for their first TD.
2) The 3rd down where Ensor missed Lampert for a catch that would've kept the drive alive. We settled for a FG instead.
3) The screen play where the Gatesville WR was able to stay in bounds all the way down the sidelines to set up the final TD.
4) Ensor underthrowing his final pass for an INT. He hadn't underthrown a ball in 2 years until then. At times, you would hear people groan that he overthrew many routes. Once he underthrew that INT...he never recovered and it carried over to his senior year and at ACU as well.

Our corner thought he had an INT, but they faked the short pass and the receiver went long. Everyone in the stands saw it coming and you could hear us all try to yell at him not to bite. But hey, it was a great play call by Gatesville. :( :( :(

Oh yeah... I remember that play too. I just wasn't going to bring it up cause it makes me nauseated. I don't think that Fred K. has ever gotten over it either. I also remember thinking that if Bobby Mc. hadn't gotten hurt, that the QB might not have had time to get that pass off. Oh well.....:bigcry: :bigcry:

1987 4A State Finals, Kyle Field

WO-S 17, Rockwall 7

Not very suspenseful, but a lot of fun.... I bet a lot of the WO-S fans don't realize (or don't remember) that Todd Dodge, in his first year out of college and in his first coaching job was the QB/WR coach at Rockwall that year. After that season he moved on to become the O.C. at McKinney for 4 years...

excerpt from the Houston Chronicle
Thursday December 17th, 1987

WO-Stark faces Dodge connection once again

In 1980, the season when Todd Dodge passed his way into the record book with 3,135 yards and guided Port Arthur Jefferson to the Class 5A final, West Orange-Stark was in the District 22-5A lineup with the Jackets.

Jeff and Dodge handed WO-S its lone setback that season, a 30-6 setback that left the Mustangs on the sidelines with a 9-1 record. Two years later, the rules were changed and two teams per district - the champion and runnerup - advanced to the playoffs.

Following an 11-1-1 Class 5A playoff march in 1985, WO-S dropped back to Class 4A and has dominated play at that level for the past two campaigns. Saturday at Kyle Field in College Station, the defending state champion Mustangs, winners of 22 consecutive games, face 12-3 Rockwall in the 1987 championship game.

And Rockwall, which rebounded from a 1-2 start to reach the final, happens to have a Dodge connection. Dodge, an assistant coach at Rockwall, handles quarterback Andy Hollan, who has passed for 1,531 yards and 17 touchdowns.

"I see a lot of Todd Dodge when I look at their quarterback," says WO-S Coach Dan Hooks. "They're on a roll and they keep finding a way to win."

Rockwall upset Sweetwater 13-6 in the semifinals last week, while WO-S turned back Kerrville Tivy 21-7 as quarterback Tremain Lewis ran for two touchdowns and passed to Eric West on a 38-yard scoring play.

The WO-S defense, a unit that jolted 5A power MacArthur 6-3 when the Generals were ranked No. 1 in the state, is anchored by '86 holdovers Quinton Tezeno and Kevin Smith. Tezeno made the key stop in a goal-line stand against Tivy, while Smith has 11 pass interceptions.

In the other state championship games:

Class 3A - Cuero (15-0) vs. McGregor (14-0-1) - All eyes are on Cuero junior Robert Strait, who has already established a class rushing record of 3,301 yards, third-best on the all-time charts. Kenneth Hall of Sugar Land holds the top two spots on the rushing list with 4,045 yards in 1953 and 3,458 in 1952.

Last season as a sophomore, the 215-pound Strait rushed for 2,089 yards but Cuero lost in the final to Jefferson 24-0. Two years ago, the Gobblers bowed in the title game to Daingerfield 47-22.

McGregor's upset hopes hinge on quarterback Jimmy Hering (1,673 passing yards) and running back David Jackson (1,350 rushing yards).

I agree with everything except the Ensor never recovering. He has recovered just fine.

Ensuing kick off was HUGE!! 40+ return to set up our scoring drive. It was the craziest game I've been too!!

2006: Calallen vs. Buda 20-21
......... Sinton-Hitchcock game i was out of the gate and hitchcock fans telling us go home losers, when i hear Hitchcock score and miss the extra point we all go back and watch the last few seconds of the game along the side of fence the Pirate receiver catches the td pass to make it 19-18.

last year Calallen game still cant believe they lost that game.

Hutto had to rally from 21-20 down with about 8 minutes to go.

Drove length of the field, ate up almost all of the clock, and kicked the game winning FG with 5 seconds left to advance 23-21.

As far as a playoff game that i witnessed in person. Id have to say Hutto vS Marlin in the 2nd round of the playoffs in 05. I beleive Hutto won 29-22. It was a special game to me because Marlin was/is a well respected program and its the furthest Ive ever seen Hutto go in the playoffs at the time. Also, Hutto looked like they might blow the game but kept their heads up and fought back hard and totally dominated at the end. That game made me realize that Hutto was gonna have a very special season in which they did.

Sealy lost to Commerce 17-10 in the 1999 State Semifinals. That was a tough game to watch. TJ Mills' last game as Sealy Tiger Head Coach. It's a shame it had to end up that way.

yah... there was some crying... damn good game though... sad to see Sealy lose in that close one, I was a fan since we were knocked out of the playoffs in the second round... but it was kinda cool to see Commerce get that Sealy Monkey off of their backs...

I know. In the 4 seasons prior Sealy hardly ever had a close game. I remember when we played Needville mid-District and Coach Mills started subbing halfway through the 3rd Quarter. We won 60-0. That 4-Peat Sealy Tiger team was probably the best HS team I've ever seen. Commerce did the unthinkable that year.

LV-McGregor district rematch in the playoffs in 87. This was before OT was put in, and it was a tie in the district matchup with McGregor winning on penetrations. McGregor won the rematch and went on to lose in the title game to Robert Strait and Cuero.

From the homer perspective its gotta be 2001 Everman-Forney at Pennington...but a homer pick is too easy

How about these great ones I've seen

1992? SLC-Vernon at Pennington....maybe the greatest 3A game ever...

2002 Converse Judson-Midland High: Judson hits an 80 yard TD pass with 30 seconds left to win state.....

2006: SLC-Trinity: 55,000 people in Texas Stadium..nuff said
