Hallettsville is changing districts to 27 3A with Yoakum, Gonzales, Cuero, Luling and Goliad. Anyone think they will be able to compete for a playoff spot? I don't know much about them except what Dave Campbell's has on them. Any thoughts on coaches, quality of players etc.....I don't remember them being in the playoffs lately...They left a strong district to join another...

i played against halletsville. i am from bellville and i know that if halletsville plays any of their opponents the way they played us they will have a definite shot at the playoffs in their new district.

hallettsville will have some good skill people. there problem last year was quickness on both sides of line. they have some big boys but slow. there junior class is pretty strong.they play hard and will be a factor in district race. new stadium looks great.

I kind of feel bad for them, because they got thrown from one tough district to another. The realignment wasn't super kind to them. You'd think losing LaGrange and Bellville and moving to Region IV from III wouldn't be a bad thing, but....

After posting this question I took a look at their enrollment....Gonzales 784...Cuero 726...Yoakum 487...Luling 454...Goliad 434...Hallettsville 384......that can't help much....

Orangeblood, that enrollment thing doesn't measure kids' hearts. Odem just dropped down to 2A from 30-3a, and they were nearly always in the top four, and usually in the top three of an eight team district. Probably gonna rule South Texas 2A with Refugio.

66...I'm not saying that it is impossible to win with a smaller enrollment...I'm simply saying that larger schools do better overall than the smaller ones...Commerce won the "small school" title last year and they have 143 more kids than Hallettsville....that's alot in 3A...by the way Odem (enrollment 332) lost to Yoakum (enrollment 487) 26 to 14 in the first round last year....

Yea, they never have gone very far in the playoffs in 3A, just do good in district. I agree that numbers do usually make a difference, just saying not always.

Orangeblood, Burnet (enrollment 858) lost to Bellville (enrollment 664) in the first round last season also. Halletsville has some tradition, and will compete.

66...Take this info for what it is worth. These are the teams that made it to the Division II Regional games and their enrollment

Region I
Bridgeport 641
CRANE 315 (now 2A)
Kennedale 769
ALPINE 336 (now 2A)

Region II
Commerce 527
WINNSBORO 414
Gladewater 585
Wilmer-Hutchins 692

Region III
NEWTON 353
China Spring 519
Giddings 563
RICE CONSOLIDATED 447

Region IV
La Grange 657
Mathis 585
Wimberley 603
Yoakum 487

....anyway I'm not sure whose argument this data supports. I was plesantly suprised to see that some "smaller" schools got that far, but 2/3 of them were not. I used the newest enrollment figures so it's not completely accurate. I was pulling for Rice to win the title, because I knew they were a smaller 3A team. Anyway the only reason I'm going on about this is because it's my opinion that class 3A is the most unfair when it comes to enrollment. When it ranges from 900 to around 350 that's a problem. Hope I'm not coming off as a prick...just love talking football.

Accually Halletsville was in the same district with all of the teams they're in the same district with now minus Goliad, and then add Edna and Palacios... They were stuck in district 26-3A with all of us for the '98 and '99 season, they made it to the playoffs in '98, and in '99 they were 1 win short... They know the teams they're in the district with so I believe they'll do fine!!!

Orangeblood, no problem at all. You make some good points. It's an ages old topic in football. I'm sure we both know there are many factors including tradition, attitude, heart, coaching, enrollment and so forth. It's been a topic of discussion many times on this and other boards, and opinions vary.
I'm not/never been a coach, I have worked with kids though, and I can tell you from personal experience that the one thing you cannot teach is heart. I also agree with you that 3A has the widest disparity in the numbers. However, smaller schools usually FIND a way to compete with larger schools when they're forced to play them.
