Why isn't the 4-4 used more often in 3A? In certain situations, it would be the best defense to run. Too many teams always jump into a 5-2, or 5-3, or even the old school 50. The 4-4 is great because of its versatility in different situations.

Let's talk defense!!

most teams that run a 4-2-5 are actually running a 4-4. They just like to call it a 4-2-5 because it sounds better against the spread

p4s...every time I try to copy a diagram of anything it automatically left aligns everything. Sorry.

Rice runs a true 4-2-5 on D and they...well...they get hammered by everyone. I have yet to see a 3A team line up in a 4-4 this season. Granted, I haven't seen everyone, but I'm just curious as to why they don't utilize it more often.

A couple years ago, I asked a high school DC why it wasn't utilized more often and this was his answer to me:

"It's too easy for the offense to check out of it."

I was looking for a more in-depth answer. WHY is it so easy for them to check out of it? etc etc....

i think anytime you run an even front it makes it easier for the offense to run check with me's....its easy to trap check with me and make calls at the line...etc

because the offense can audible to another play and coaches with high powered offenses can score easily...

I'm not talking about using it as a base...just in certain situations. Heck, blitz your FS, play your 2 OLB's head up w/ the outside guy on the LOS (OT or TE)...play your strongside end in a 9 and your weakside end in a 5...line your DTs up as 3-techs. There's so many things you can do with that.

Do you guys blitz/stunt a lot, or are you more of a coverage-type defense?

depends on what team were we playin and if they had any speed or athletes but i would say stunt and blitz more than anything cuz we played only 2 true passin teams...

we run a 4-2-5 or split if you prefer, the true 4-4 gives the o-line good blocking angles in my opinion

At a 5A school in Houston if everything goes well. I'd like to start as a LB Coach, but we'll see what happens...

Everybody told me I should play FB all through HS (I graduated in 2002), but I never did listen...lol

That is a good question. I saw it last year a couple of times and I was impressed with it's versatility. And you can Disguise what you are going to do with it. I like the Split the best of the 4-4 alignments. Great D to run IMHO.
