Okay, not really a definition...

in the name Chuck "The Ice Man" Liddell, what is the word for "The Ice Man"????

I'm thinking Alias could work, or would it be more of an Epithet?

I'm driving myself nuts here...

wait, if it were just Chuck "The Ice Man" would that be an Epithet? without the last name? or is it also an Epithet WITH the last name? I need to know what it is WITH the last name attatched...

I was thinking that as well, but I double checked in the dictionary and it doesn't seem that's the word I'm looking for... more like a shortened name like "Jim" for "Jimmy"

no, don't think that would work... I don't think anyway... that's kinda like Alias... was really hoping it was Alias because I'm trying to name a song and that sounds less complicated...

I'm talking about what the person is actually known as... not really "also" known ass... am I making sense? ha

Nickname? Pseudonym? Title?

Or maybe the definition is "Ice Man" and you were looking for the word? I'd go with "Yeti."

Okay, lemme try this again...

my example:

Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell

I wanna know what "The Iceman" is while being used WITH the first and last name... or did y'all already guess that's what I meant?

alrighty, when looking for a VERY accurate word for my example, pseudonym comes very close... one definition of the words says:

"a fictitious name used when the person performs a particular social role "

that kinda words... yet another definition says:

"a fictitious name used by an author to conceal his or her identity; pen name. "

that's not what I'm looking for... plus I don't wanna name a song "Pseudonym" haha...

Epithet is close... an an Epithet is pretty much an Alias, right?

I really want it to be Alias... but I don't wanna be a dumbass really...

Gobbla2001
11-18-2007, 11:24 PM
but Alias is just like AKA... I wish Alias was the umbrella term...

see I thought that as well... a "tag"... but I don't want the name of the song being "tag" and don't want it being "tag name" haha...

just trying to explore all of the possibilities...

A handle conceals someone's Identity, like in CB-radio talk... example: "Lost Sheep to Sheppard, Lost Sheep to Sheppard"... without having watched the duke's of hazzard, or without knowing the person before talking to them, you wouldn't know the identity of "Lost Sheep" or "Sheppard"... those are their handles

Icognito is not using your true identity... then there is disguised, which means you're hiding your identity...

I'm talking about the name of a person, first and last, with a characteristic of themselves etc... used in between their first and last names...

say you know a lady whose name is Jane Doe... she's always been known to live on the edge a bit... so everyone called her Jane "Dair-Devil" Doe... that is what I am talking about...

Well... if you don't like any of the options thrown out already you could go back to Ancient Rome where they used the term 'agnomen'

From Wikipedia: An agnomen is not a pseudonym, as it is a real name. An agnomen is usually a name in addition to and not a substitution for the real name. Examples of agnomina from later times would be Aristides "the Just" or "Iron" Mike Tyson.

How about "sobriquet"? (Epithet has a negative connotation and I doubt that applies in this case).

alias kinda works though... someone tell me it does

Gobbla2001
11-19-2007, 08:48 PM
okay, so how about this...

in the example "Chuck 'The Iceman' Liddell", "The Iceman" could be his Alias, something he never goes by, something he uses to conceal his identity... yet it is discovered that he used that Alias and now the Alias is a part of his name...

why did I ever start this thread? I'm gunna use Alias...

Here ya go, take your pick.....

John Doe, John Hancock, John Henry, agname, agnomen, alias, appellation, autograph, autonym, brand, cognomen, compellation, denomination, designation, epithet, eponym, flag*, handle*, head, heading, label, matronymic, moniker, monogram, nickname, nomen, patronymic, pen name, pet name, place name, prenomen, proper name, pseudonym, rubric, sign, signature, sobriquet, stage name, style, surname, tag, term, trade name

or,.....nom de plume

sinton66

Actually, I guess nom de guerre would be closer to appropriate. Nom de plume is basically for authors.
