WACO — Copperas Cove scored 23 fourth-quarter points, including a safety with 1:06 to play for a bidistrict playoff comeback win Saturday afternoon against Waxahachie.
Down 28-14 with 7:05 to play, Copperas Cove (9-2) began its comeback with a 76-yard drive to cut the lead to seven with 5:18 to play on a Troy Vital dive into the end zone. Copperas Cove went on to score 16 more points, including the late safety to seal the win.
Waxahachie (9-2) was led by quarterback Boomer Collins who had a pair of touchdown passes and 273 yards throwing.
Waxahachie went up early in the first half with two touchdowns, one on Dominique Carson’s 15-yard run and the other on a Sam Gagliano 7-yard run.
Vital had 185 yards rushing and two touchdowns for Copperas Cove, ranked No. 9 in the state's Class 4A poll, For the second year in a row, Copperas Cove scored a first-round playoff win against Waxahachie, who on Saturday was ranked No. 10 in the state.
