I just don't see the Tarpons containing that speed. Tarpons have "valley" speed, but nothing compared to Cuero. Sorry Tarpon buddies.

Heck, anything can happen so go out there and give it your best shot!!!

Cuero 42
Port Isabel 14

Cuero 42
Port Isabel 14 I think it be more like
Cuero 45 Port Isabel 28
They have some speed with Nunez but defensively not enough speed to contain Cuero offense.

Yeah, you know fast, but not as fast as teams up north. Hey, don't worry back in Sinton's "hey days" we had "south texas" speed. ;)

Well, in his defense when I saw him play against Oso, he was hurt and I never really saw him at "full speed".

In PI against RH they were better than what they showed against West Oso and Nunez is fast, it will be a good test for the Gobblers.

Tarpons do have a good secondary. We know Cuero has a balanced offense. If need be PI can too, today we went alot more to the air and had success with it again. Difference in the game, is how the D matches up against the Gobblers, can PI contain the run? Can Cuero D contain Nolan the entire nite? I have always said, you may be able to contain Nolan here and there, but sooner or later he will break one. What worries me is the penalties and mental mistakes the Tarpons continue to make, if they can elminate or at least minimize them, it will turn out to be a great game.

And yes those mental mistakes have to be eliminated in this game if the Tarpons are to stay in this game.

They got to the ball fast enough, but were missing tackles and or not wrapping and it took the 2nd or 3rd tackler to bring him down. But by the 4th, PI still had some endurance to finally wear them down, I hope if it comes down to it, that will be the case too, they have played alot of full 4qtrs in the second part of the season, that might help them out.

Tarpons have a good shot if they play solid football...heck less than average "valley speed" (Mercedes) almost pulled off an upset against Calallen. It all comes down to execution.

Well I will have to go with my boys in this one. Quincy is just TOO much and when he takes a break, we bring in our second string running back... a 6' 200+ lb. all state sprinter. Throw in a couple fast, sure handed receivers and a soph. QB that will choose his college when he graduates... an offensive line that is playing great right now... and Kaeron... just too much weaponry for the Tarpons. It could be close, but Cuero takes this one  BTW, I never mention our kicker, but he has been awesome. He may very well come into play in later rounds. I think he would make anything 40 yds. and in. I would feel comfortable with the game on the line and him kicking one. ;)

Cuero takes this one easy, easier than most people want to admit. I just don't think you could use a game that happened 13 yrs ago as a measuring stick thats what people have been doing well maybe not this board:helpme: I'm going to get it now help me out cuero peeps lol I don't care its the truth lol.

Port Isabel learned Cuero a thing or two once already: don't ever underestimate a Valley team just because you may have more weapons...

Cuero will be going into this game representing Cuero, and our district... Port Isabel will go into this game representing all of the valley, that's just how it goes down there...

this will be no cake-walk, and IF (big freakin' if) Cuero does win by more than 14 it'd because the Gobblers ran away with it at the end...

gunna be a battle out there...

Go Gobblers!!!

Just like we put the 1993 creaming to bed in 94. No question, Cuero is the better team coming in, and I think it will take a mistake free game for the Tarpons to come out on top. But they will go out there and give it their best. I think PI will learn from this game and come back next couple of years a better team from it.

not really... when discussing our early to mid 90's teams Port Isabel does come up... along with Sealy, Sealy, Sealy and Southlake Carroll...

you know what I'm talkin' about...

last year when Rio Hondo and Cuero met all I read on RGV was "you can do it, Rio Hondo, we did it in '94"... sayin...

happens about every season really... and every offseason t'boot...

Unfortunately, you're not going to get the "Port Isabel is the last team left alive in the RGV" type crowd like you saw back in 1994. However, I think the stands in Kingsville were even MORE full for the Quarterfinal vs. Bandera and the Semifinal vs. Sealy.

Regardless, you'll see a pretty big crowd on the PI side.

Naw, it was a Palacios Shark that wanted a taste of Tarpon. Don't kid yourself, Turkeys can't take off a chunk of Tarpon THAT big.

On that note....I'd love to see a Palacios vs. Port Isabel non-district game next season. :D

well a tarpon that size can take up to 8 hours to land... the turkey didn't do it all in one bite... kinda pecked at it for a couple of hours and spit out little chunks... it was feeding the sea-chickens...

Cuero executed well last night and spread the ball around, more nights like that and they'll advance once again.
Defense also stepped up after mathis tried their off balanced line up. they were able to adjust quickly after the big gain.

if not it's Robert Armstrong...

Why are we trying to boost a game up that will end up so lopsided. This is crazy, Most teams that know its comming start talking all kinds of mess in hopes for an upset. People this team is out for one thing. These guys are just onemore team in the way. The trip back to the valley will be a long drive back. But at least we made it to round two right Tarpons?

I believe coach stumbough (not sure how to spell it)is still their, I never liked his offense much. I dont believe he has ever faced cuero since leaving.

Since littleton has left I dont believe Port I will have any advantage on Cuero. I dont know excactly how fast Port I is but I know the gobblers are one of the fastest teams in 3a.

If Port I can keep it close and hope for an elements game(wind & rain) then they might have a chance.

However I dont know if they can stop the passing attack the gobblers put on.

Cuero 49 Port I 20

Could be worse if Cuero wins turnover battle by +3

Hmmm 2 great foods to feast on especially that its Thanksgiving holiday Gobbler on Thursday yummmm and then Tarpon on Friday:) Going with the Gobblers no one can't keep up with Cuero's speed in Region 4 . The only team that might be able to match their competition is Wimberley if its a rematch pretty sure the Gobblers will do everything in its power to come out on top this year. RH defense has some quickness, might be why they hang with Cuero last year if 28 points is hanging. Seems they returned 6 starters from last year on defense. PI defense is a bigger unit than RH but lack some team speed on D.

It be interesting to see how Nunez does against Cuero defense.

By hanging in most cases 28 points is alot of points in a playoff game, but in this case holding a team like Cuero to 28 is a strong showing and if it can be repeated i think RH offense is good enough to match Cuero point for point. was it 28 or less? i'll go back and look:) K the score was 21-8 and i'm guessing a score was made not against the defense. K back to this threads game.

21-8

Final

The defense this year is nearly identical to last years defense.

The difference is that RH has more options on offense this year . . . and our star player is not out with a knee injury. *knock on wood*. RH is much more balanced offensively (compared to last year) as well.

This can be seen in the 2006 vs 2007 PI/RH scores.

Considering that PI's offense is nearly identical as last year's offense. RH's defense is nearly identical as last year's defense . . . PI beat RH last year . . . PI should put up a good fight this year.

Edit: The only difference between 2006 and 2007 is RH has a much improved offense with more options.

Johnny 5
11-19-2007, 11:26 PM
Oh, and BTW . . . you all were predicting the same scores against RH last year . . . it did not happen.

Sure, RH lost . . . but we hung with the Gobblers all 4 quarters., and held them to one of the lowest, if not the lowest score of the year.

You might want to chew on that ya turkeys

While we do have the same style offense and defense as last season, our weapons changed somewhat... when they change it doesn't change your style, just which plays you run more, less, and add...

I really think that the biggest difference between this year's team and last year's team is that they realized coming in that they were not as good as the Gobblers were in '04, '05 and '06... they knew they had to work at it and they did... we lucked out to have those two losses in preseason against great competition, it has made this team a more dangerous team than last year... they're more hungry as a team... not taking anything for granted...

that's mainly why I love our chances against PI...

4 pages and I got nothing but laughs out of this thread. Does Port Isabel REALLY think they can hang with the athletes that Cuero generally puts on the field??? REALLY???? Wow. Good luck to the Tarpons, that's what they'll need, in heavy doses, to beat Cuero.

I haven't watched Cuero play this year, but traditionally speaking they are tough and looking over their schedule and scores, having only lost 2 games by close margins....well that does not bode well for Port Isabel.

Too bad I'll be in Houston this weekend or I might have gone to this game just to see the crowd reactions.

 1st ,We're the fans - so YES we think our boys have a chance (in any game)
2nd, If you go into a game thinking your going to loose, you have already lost. So YES they go into every game thinking they can win. And yes, we'll just let the kids play and they determine who will win, not the fans. And if it doesn't happen this year, we'll try again next year.

BTW, I guess you don't know how to have fun, that's what this thread is about, again we are the fans we're allowed to do that.

Blah blah blah...you can talk about how bad PI's chances of winning are,you can compare scores and schedules and talk about how PI doesnt stand a chance;we've heard it all before....but know one thing PI will not back down from a battle they will come at you with everything they got,it took Altair Rice 4 OT's to learn that,Tarpons love being the underdogs in playoffs it only motivates them more...No matter how big the opponent is or how fast they are the Tarpons will not let down until the final second on the clock ticks away...I hope Cuero comes in underestimating PI,because PI will be ready and trust me we wont be Intimated at all!

I think that also happened in 2004?

But, then it was the Wylie Bulldogs who had no chance!

Okay, on this one you are just wrong. Cuero had it rough in every single game that year. Wimberley, Palestine, and Abilene Wylie. We were so thankful to be in the final with that team that we never talked smack. Go back and read the posts. We repeatedly said that we were not the best team, we were the team that won every week. We were damn grateful to be there and to say anything other than that is just wrong.

Man, this post is almost too long too read. Port I does a great job for a team south of San Antonio. With that said, Port I`s realistic shot at beating Cuero is if Cuero is stricken with food poisoning before the game. even then I think Cuero will win by 20+. Without food poisoning, they win by 35+.

Hmmm.... I had a hard time voting in this poll due to "emotional baggage." PI beat LH in the 3rd round when my oldest son was a senior... Cuero beat LH in the 4th when my youngest was a senior...

Both schools have tremendous fans.

Good luck to both teams!

Gobblers vs. Tarpons for area championship

Wednesday, November 21, 2007 8:24 AM CST

For the fourth consecutive year, Cuero High School's Gobblers will advance to the third round of the play-offs. Friday the Gobblers will face Port Isabel's Tarpons at 7:30 p.m. at Buccaneer Stadium in Corpus Christi.

At this area play-off contest, Cuero will be on the visitor's side of the stadium and gates open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for students pre-sale and $7 at the gate.

Port Isabel comes into the game with a 7-3 season record and 3-1 district record. They defeated Raymondville Friday 28-7 to reach this contest. All three teams that defeated Port Isabel this season are still in the play-offs including 4A Edcouch-Elsa. Two of the Tarpons games this season were decided in over time.

"Port Isabel is a sound, fundamental team," states Gobbler head coach Mark Reeve. "They do a great job of running and tackling and they execute real well. Teams like that don't beat themselves."

The Tarpons have made the play-offs every year since 2000. Last year they lost to Orange Grove in the area contest.

Gobbler fans may remember the last time these two teams met was in 1994 at Kingsville. The game ended in a 20-20 tie with the Tarpons advancing on penetrations, 5-4. The only other time the two teams played each other was in 1993 when Cuero won 63-8.

The Tarpons are coached by for Gobbler coaches Monty Stumbaugh and Wade Bertram.

Cuero comes into this game scoring an average of 48.4 points per game while giving up 15.36 per contest. Port Isabel is averaging 20.4 points per game while giving up 16.1.

Port Isabel has relied on 11 starters from last year's 9-3 team leading the Tarpon charge this season.

"They will be ready to play," notes Coach Reeve. "We have a lot of respect for them. Every game from here on will get tougher."

Stumbaugh faces former team Cuero in Class 3A area round
BY MIKE GONZALEZ, The Brownsville Herald

Port Isabel football head coach Monty Stumbaugh speaks to his team on August 11 after a workout at Port Isabel High School. Stumbaugh was a former offensive coordinator for Cuero and will go up against them for the first time since leaving the school sev
G. Daniel Lopez, The Brownsville Herald
Nov 22, 2007 10:21 pm

Monty Stumbaugh will see a lot of familiar faces on the other side of the field.

Before hired as Port Isabel head coach in 2001, Stumbaugh served as offensive coordinator from 1996-2000 with the Cuero Gobblers. As one of the premier powers in Class 3A, Stumbaugh enjoyed much success with Cuero, including the 1998 season where he coached the Gobblers to the state championship game against Aledo, now a Class 4A program.

Seven years later, Stumbaugh goes up against his former team for the first time in the Class 3A Division II area round contest at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Buccaneer Stadium in Corpus Christi. The seventh-year Tarpon coach said five members of the Gobbler coaching staff are still there and still have plenty of friends that live in the small community.

“You always want to coach against your buddies,” Stumbaugh said. “We figured we were gonna play them in the second or fourth round if we got lucky.”

While the reunion will be nice, make no mistake about it, Stumbaugh is there for one reason and one reason only—to continue the conquest of playing December football. With a win tonight, the Tarpons (7-3 overall) would play in the third round for the first time in three years and would fall either a day short or right on target to playing in December.

“We would love to get back to that third round,” Stumbaugh said. “We had one plan and that’s to play December football. That’s what we talked to the kids about.”

At this stage of the playoffs, Port Isabel knows it has to crank up the volume a few notches. Stumbaugh sees it more like full volume. This Cuero team (9-2) is one he has high praise for. In fact, he called the Gobblers the fastest team the Tarpons have faced since playing against Marlin in the 2003 Class 3A state semi-final. The Gobblers blew out Mathis 64-7 in their bi-district match last week. The attack is led by running back Quincy Whittington (1,278 yards, 17 touchdowns), quarterback Tyler Arndt (107-of-152, 1,985 yards, 20 touchdowns), who hasn’t thrown a single pick this season. It will be a true test for the Seawall Defense that gave up only 146 yards (third lowest allowed this season) and had five sacks against Raymondville in PI’s bi-district win last week. The Tarpons also had three turnovers and 12 penalties for 85 yards. Stumbaugh knows they can’t give Cuero a short field or it can be disastrous.

“They can score like bang,” Stumbaugh said. “It don’t take long. They’re very explosive. We must play good, sound defense and keep the big play from them. They’re gonna score points.”

So the game plan is obvious. Keep the dangerous Cuero offense off the field as much as possible. It also helps that the weather in Corpus Christi calls for wet and cold conditions, which can play into the Tarpons’ favor.

Another breakout game for running back Nolan Nuñez would put him near or even over the 2,000 yard mark. The senior enters with 1,781 yards and has scored 22 touchdowns in 10 games played. Stumbaugh credits the offensive line as well as Roli Alaniz, who Stumbaugh referred him as “a heck of a blocker.” First-cousin and quarterback David Alaniz (60-of-116, 911 yards, seven touchdowns) has the capability to hurt opponents with his arm. The senior was nearly flawless in the bi-district contest completing 9-of-11 for 101 yards and two scores.

“(We have to) try to control the line of scrimmage and not outrun them sideline to sideline,” Stumbaugh said. “Make their secondary make tackles.”

The victor of this game would then face the winner of the Wimberly/Lytle contest in the Class 3A regional round. One thing is for sure, Stumbaugh is not ready to end this ride yet.

“I hope to shake hands with them (after the game) and tell them good luck in basketball,” Stumbaugh said.

Good read. I don't know anything about Port Isabel, but I know enough about Cuero to believe they're going to beat the Tarpons.

You never know though, less-talented teams can always find a way to beat more talented teams. It's called...character. Maybe Port Isabel will 'shock the world' by beating Cuero. We'll see...

I'm down for a M&G, and don't worry about Laureano over on the RGV Boards.

I'll PM you my cell # so we can work something out. I know Footballgal and NYY will be at the game as well, I'll try to get them together with me for a M&G while you get all the Cuero folks together.

Regarding the cell phone, I use Cricket. I'm not 100% sure if I'll have service in the Corpus Christi area or not. If you go to my voicemail right away, then I don't. If that happens, try to get Footballgal's cell number to get in contact with her.

OK, I'm out the door! LATER!

GO TARPONS!

Best of luck to both teams..May everyone drive safely to and from the stadium, should be an awesome atmosphere with two tradition rich schools going at it...

My Predicition

If Tarpons play focused and avoid costly penalties and turnovers I say PI 35
Cuero 31

If not....

Cuero 42
Tarpons 28

Cuero 42
Tarpons 28 :) 45-28 Cuero is what i think if PI cant stop them a few times. PI will score some points, just have to come up with some stops to stay in the game.

CORPUS CHRISTI — As Cuero running back Quincey Whittington busted down the sideline and crossed the goal line from 53 yards in the Gobblers’ second play from scrimmage in the first quarter, it was apparent Port Isabel was in trouble.

Sure enough, Cuero (10-2) went on to score three more times in the first half and put away the Tarpons 42-14 win in both team’s Class 3A Division II area round playoff match at Buccaneer Stadium in Corpus Christi. The Gobblers now face Wimberly, who defeated Lytle 42-6, in the Class 3A regional round next week.

Whittington was the fastest man on the field and exploited the Seawall defense for 179 yards rushing and scored four touchdowns on only 12 carries. The senior tailback also connected on a 22-yard halfback pass for a score to Kaeron Johnson on fourth and 10 of the first drive of the third quarter. Whittington had 126 yards and three touchdowns by halftime. Port Isabel (7-4) managed to slow him down in the second half, but he then exploded for a 39-yard touchdown late in the third quarter to put the Gobblers up 42-7.

Cuero head coach Mark Reed said Whittington has accounted for almost 3,000 yards of offense this season.

“He’s a special kid and does a good job running and catching,” said Reed.

Along the way, quarterback Tyler Arndt (8-of-13, 166 yards, one touchdown) was rock solid running the offense. His touchdown strike was a pretty 33-yard throw to Isaiah Glover over three Tarpon defenders in the corner of the end zone on fourth and 14 to put the Gobblers up 14-0. By then, Port Isabel was forced to play catch up and it wasn’t the kind of game head coach Monty Stumbaugh wanted to be in.

“You don’t want to fall behind to a team like this,” Stumbaugh said. “They’re a real good football team.”

The Tarpons had success moving the ball in the first half, but a key penalty and a turnover damaged PI’s chances of making this a game.

On their second drive, the Tarpons put together a nice 10-play drive that put them to the Cuero 12, but a false start penalty drove them back five yards. After an incomplete pass and a one-yard run, quarterback David Alaniz (7-of-22, 91 yards, one touchdown, one interception) threw another incomplete pass on fourth and nine and the Tarpons came out with nothing.

On the next drive, Port Isabel again moved the ball and got as close as the Gobbler 28, but that’s when Alaniz was picked off by Glover setting up Cuero’s third touchdown of the half.

“We moved the ball, but a couple of penalties here and there beat us,” said Stumbaugh. “Tonight, they were the better team than we were.”

Things got worse when running back Nolan Nuñez left the game with an apparent ankle sprain in the second quarter and didn’t return. The senior’s last carry as a Tarpon was a nice 20-yard run inside before being brought down by two Cuero defenders. Nuñez ended the contest with eight rushes for 60 yards. In Nuñez’s absence, Diego Garcia came in and helped the Tarpons elevate their offense in the second half with 87 rushing yards on nine rushes.

The Tarpons’ two scores came in the second half off a four-yard plunge by Roli Alaniz (13 carries, 48 yards) and a touchdown catch by Dustin Maddox from six yards out with three ticks on the clock. Despite the season coming to an end, Stumbaugh said he’s proud of his players especially for extending the streak to seven straight bi-district championships.

“We aren’t holding our heads down on anything,” Stumbaugh said. “The kids played their tails off.”
