It's taking quite a bit of Tabasco and Tony Chachere's, but this crow I'm eatin' here ain't half bad.......23-3A put the "beat down" on 24-3A this year.

Congratulations to Columbus on a great season.

Good luck to Caldwell next week.

That's ok - last year D24 won 2/3 & shocked many on here. This year D23 was stronger. Good luck to all.

Columbus had some pretty big old boys out there last night. Their quarterback was aload and hard to bring down.

Caldwell uses strong second half to beat Columbus

AUSTIN -- Caldwell's stinging Hornets put together a second-half defensive effort that helped them defeat the Columbus Cardinals 42-31 on Friday night at the Burger Center in the Class 3A Division II bi-district playoffs.

The Hornets (9-1) will face the winner of Saturday's Kirbyville-Cleveland game in the area playoffs.

Caldwell's defense, led by Zach Doonan, Adam Supak, Austin Woodburn and Xavier Canto, did a sterling second-half job of shutting down Columbus' best running back Curtis Carter. He carried 17 times for 115 yards in the first half but was held to 39 yards on 10 carries in the second half.

Meanwhile, Caldwell's Canto, the second-leading rusher in the Brazos Valley, kept his numbers up with 215 yards on 21 carries.

The Hornets got off to an early start when Farrin Sims scored on a 1-yard run. Scott Ofczarzak converted the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Columbus (9-2) answered with Carter scoring from 5 yards out and Jamie Strauss converting the extra point to tie the score.

Columbus then went ahead on Carter's 8-yard touchdown run with Strauss converting for a 14-7 lead.

In the second quarter, Caldwell scored three times beginning with Ofczarzak's 26-yard touchdown pass to Eli Gage. Canto later scored on a 48-yard run up the middle, and Ofczarzak gave Caldwell a 25-24 halftime lead with a 16-yard touchdown run on a quarterback keeper.

Columbus scored twice in the second quarter, getting a 34-yard field goal from Strauss and another 8-yard touchdown run from Carter.

The Cardinals regained the lead with 3:10 left in the third quarter when Columbus quarterback Stewart Beaird hit tight end Steven Appelt on a 36-yard touchdown pass. Strauss converted the PAT to give the Cardinals a 31-25 lead.

The Hornets drove 81 yards in six plays for a 22-yard field goal by Ofczarzak, then the tide turned for good.

On the ensuing kickoff, Caldwell's Ofczarzak recovered an onside kick at the Columbus 37-yard line.

The Hornets scored in six plays with Canto going around left end for 24 yards after a great fake by Ofczarzak. Chris Supak kicked the PAT to put Caldwell up 35-31, and the Hornets maintained the lead the rest of the way.

Columbus went to the air to try to get back in the game, but Beaird was sacked for a loss by Canto and Colton Eubanks on a fourth down play. Beaird was flagged for grounding when he threw the ball as he was going down, and Caldwell only had to go 32 yards for the final score.

Kysan Woolverton did most of the work on the drive, carring four times for 14 yards and scoring on a 1-yard run.

Columbus tried desperately to rally, but Caldwell's Jacob Vasquez picked off a first down pass at the Hornet 2-yard line to end the threat.

Thanks for the congratulations! It was an exciting game with the score going back and forth more times than was comfortable. ;) Columbus does have big, strong players and it is very evident why they are 9-2. They played hard, tough football the whole night.

Good luck to District 23-3A and continue moving on through.
